this work is presented in five parts. in the first part preparation of the starting complex [pt(c^n)cl(dmso)], 1, in which c^n = n(1),c(2?)-chelated, deprotonated 2-phenylpyridine, and dmso = dimethylsulfoxide, and its reaction with 1 equiv of the biphosphine ligands bis(diphenylphosphino)amine, dppa, or bis(diphenylphosphino)methane, dppm, to give the complex [pt(c^n)cl(dppa)], 2, or [pt(c^n)c...
A clutter $mathcal{C}$ with vertex set $[n]$ is an antichain of subsets of $[n]$, called circuits, covering all vertices. The clutter is $d$-uniform if all of its circuits have the same cardinality $d$. If $mathbb{K}$ is a field, then there is a one-to-one correspondence between clutters on $V$ and square-free monomial ideals in $mathbb{K}[x_1,ldots,x_n]$ as follows: To each clutter $mathcal{C}...
We study how the homotopy type of the independence complex of a graph changes if we subdivide edges. We show that the independence complex becomes the Alexander dual if we place one new vertex on each edge of a graph. If we place two new vertices on each edge then the independence complex is the wedge of two spheres. Placing three new vertices on an edge yields the suspension of the independenc...
The enumeration of independent sets of regular graphs is of interest in statistical mechanics, as it corresponds to the solution of hard-particle models. In 2004, it was conjectured by Fendley et al., that for some rectangular grids, with toric boundary conditions, the alternating number of independent sets is extremely simple. More precisely, under a coprimality condition on the sides of the r...
We introduce a large self-dual class of simplicial complexes about which we show that each complex in it is contractible or homotopy equivalent to a sphere. Examples of complexes in this class include independence and dominance complexes of forests, pointed simplicial complexes, and their combinatorial Alexander duals.
