Amblyospora (Microsporida: Amblyosporidae) and Coelomomyces (Chytridiomycetes: Blastocladiales) have independently evolved a diverse array of unique and highly specialized mechanisms that have allowed them to more fully exploit their mosquito hosts and the aquatic environment that their hosts inhabit. Amblyospora and Coelomomyces both have complex life cycles that include obligatory development...
During a mosquito survey carried out in 1994-95, in Macau, southern China, Coelomomyces stegomyiae var. stegomyiae was found parasitizing Aedes albopictus. This constitutes the first record of this genus as potential agents of mosquito control in the area.
A new species of fungus belonging to the lethal genus Coelomomyces, C. neotropicus, is described and illustrated. It was found parasitizing larvae of two species of Culicidae, Culex pilosus and Aedes sp., in a lowland tropical wet forest swamp in northeast Costa Rica.
Some species of zoosporic fungi in the Phylum Blastocladiomycota are obligate parasites of invertebrate animals. Various stages in the life history of the host can be infected, including eggs, larvae and adults. Some parasites, such as some species of Coelomomyces, alternate between two hosts; while others, such as some species of Catenaria, require only one host for reproduction. Infection gen...
