In this paper, a model of self-organizing spiking neural networks is introduced and applied to mobile robot environment representation and path planning problem. A network of spike-response-model neurons with a recurrent architecture is used to create robot’s internal representation from surrounding environment. The overall activity of network simulates a self-organizing system with unsupervise...

In this paper, an effective sliding mode design is applied to chaos synchronization. The proposed controller can make the states of two identical modified Chua’s circuits globally asymptotically synchronized. Numerical results are provided to show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method. Keywords—Sliding mode, Chaos synchronization, Modified Chua’s circuit.

This Classifying Bird Sounds (chip notes) project’s purpose is to reduce the unwanted noise from recorded bird sound chip notes, design a scheme to detect differences and similarities between recorded chip notes, and classify bird sound chip notes. The technologies of determining the similarities of sound waves have been used in communication, sound engineering and wireless sound applications f...

In this paper we introduce the novel task of “word epoch disambiguation,” defined as the problem of identifying changes in word usage over time. Through experiments run using word usage examples collected from three major periods of time (1800, 1900, 2000), we show that the task is feasible, and significant differences can be observed between occurrences of words in different periods of time.

Marshall (1977) constructed a plausible simulation of "anomic" speech out of the 100 most common words in the English language. He suggested that impaired access to lower frequency vocabulary might underlie anomic word finding difficulties. But he also noted that another factor, age of acquisition, may exert an influence, with anomic patients experiencing particular difficulty with later acquir...

We present anO(n) time algorithm for finding the lexicographically largest fixed-density necklace of length n. Then we determine whether or not a given string can be extended to a fixed-density necklace of length n in O(n) time. Finally, we give an O(n) algorithm that finds the largest fixed-density necklace of length n that is less than or equal to a given string. The efficiency of the latter ...

Ambiguity is an inherent problem for many tasks in Natural Language Processing. Unsupervised and semi-supervised approaches to ambiguity resolution are appealing as they lower the cost of manual labour. Typically, those methods struggle with estimation of number of senses without supervision. This paper shows research on using stopping functions applied to clustering algorithms for estimation o...

Ensemble learning algorithms such as AdaBoost and Bagging have been in active research and shown improvements in classification results for several benchmarking data sets with mainly decision trees as their base classifiers. In this paper we experiment to apply these Meta learning techniques with classifiers such as random forests, neural networks and support vector machines. The data sets are ...

This paper proposes a neural network weights and topology optimization using genetic evolution and the backpropagation training algorithm. The proposed crossover and mutation operators aims to adapt the networks architectures and weights during the evolution process. Through a specific inheritance procedure, the weights are transmitted from the parents to their offsprings, which allows re-explo...

Difficulties with word retrieval, especially when naming a well-known face or object, is part of the normal ageing process, but older people fear that it could be a sign of encroaching dementia. Surprisingly, little is known about these tip-of-the-tongue situations (TOTs). In this study, groups of older and younger participants were shown a series of famous faces. At the same time, their brains...
