Drought is one of the most common abiotic stresses, affecting the growth and productivity of crop plants globally, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Different strategies are used to mitigate the impact of drought among crop plants. Exogenous application of different substances are known to decrease the effects of various abiotic stresses, including drought stress. The aim of this stud...
Animals rely on their acoustic environments to gain information regarding predator threats and social opportunities. However, because individuals have limited attention, focusing on a particular aspect of their acoustic environment may affect their ability to allocate attention elsewhere. Some previous studies support the distracted prey hypothesis, which suggests that animals may be distracted...
Using Feathers for Molecular Sexing of Straw-headed Bulbul (<i>Pycnonotus zeylanicus</i>) Offsprings
Sex determination of straw-headed bulbul offspring was carried out from 27 offspring’s plucked feather samples in a captive breeding program. Using direct PCR, this study provided more evidences that are reliable as source DNA for non-invasive and effective molecular sexing. The also revealed the sex ratio slightly inclined towards males, but there no significant difference value 0.5.
Songbirds are important models for the study of social behaviour and communication. To complement the recent genome sequencing of the domesticated zebra finch, we sequenced the brain transcriptome of a closely related songbird species, the violet-eared waxbill (Uraeginthus granatina). Both the zebra finch and violet-eared waxbill are members of the family Estrildidae, but differ markedly in the...
