We introduce the Boom Chameleon, a novel input/output device consisting of a flat-panel display mounted on a tracked mechanical boom. The display acts as a physical window into 3D virtual environments, through which a one-to-one mapping between real and virtual space is preserved. The Boom Chameleon is further augmented with a touch-screen and a microphone/speaker combination. We present a 3D a...

Seamless Messaging and intelligent network management. Both applications are agent-driven and share agent behaviours and the messaging agents rely on the network management device diagnostic agents for input. The paper introduces both problem areas in a common testbed. Usercentric seamless messaging assumes heterogeneous communication environments intended to support today’s nomadic users. The ...

This paper proposes a speech recognition technique based on acoustic models considering voice characteristic variations. Context-dependent acoustic models, which are typically triphone HMMs, are often used in continuous speech recognition systems. This work hypothesizes that the speaker voice characteristics that humans can perceive by listening are also factors in acoustic variation for constr...

OBJECTIVE To assess long-term results with consistent use of indwelling voice prostheses (Provox; Atos Medical AB, Hörby, Sweden) for vocal rehabilitation after total laryngectomy. DESIGN Retrospective clinical analysis. SETTING Comprehensive national cancer center. PATIENTS Three hundred eighteen patients (261 men and 57 women; mean age, 62 years) from November 1988, through May 1999. ...

This paper presents a new approach on transforming a modal voice into a rough or growl voice. The goal of such transformations is to be able to enhance voice expressiveness in singing voice productions. Both techniques work with spectral models and are based on adding sub-harmonics in frequency domain to the original input voice spectrum.

Four visual-world experiments, in which listeners heard spoken words and saw printed words, compared an optimal-perception account with the theory of phonological underspecification. This theory argues that default phonological features are not specified in the mental lexicon, leading to asymmetric lexical matching: Mismatching input (pin) activates lexical entries with underspecified coronal s...

In this article, we report users’ perceptions of query input errors and query reformulation strategies in voice search using data collected through a laboratory user study. Our results reveal that: 1) users’ perceived obstacles during a voice search can be related to speech recognition errors and topic complexity; 2) users naturally develop different strategies to deal with various types of wor...
