Analysis of the short-term dynamics of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 infection in response to drug therapy has elucidated crucial kinetic properties of viral dynamics in vivo (D. D. Ho et al., Nature 373:123-126, 1995; A. S. Perelson et al., Science 271:1582-1586, 1996; X. Wei et al., Nature 373:117-122, 1995). Here we investigated long-term changes in virus load in patients treated...

BACKGROUND Molecular testing for viral pathogens has resulted in increasing detection of multiple viruses in respiratory secretions of ill children. The clinical impact of multiple virus infections on clinical presentation and outcome is unclear. OBJECTIVES To compare clinical characteristics and viral load between children with multiple virus versus single virus illnesses. PATIENTS/METHODS...

Background and Aim: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is an important infectious agent in denti-stry necessitating the use of disinfectants to prevent its transmission. This study compared the efficacy of 2/100 sodium hypochlorite disinfectants prepared from 5% solution manufactured by four different manufacturers namely Ashimashi, Paknaz, Vitex and Active for disinfection of surfaces infected with HBV. ...

This study compared the sensitivity and viral load values of the AMPLICOR HIV-1 MONITOR microwell version 1.0, microwell version 1.5, and COBAS version 1.5 tests. Based on the percentage of positive replicates, the microwell version 1.5 and COBAS version 1.5 tests are more sensitive than the microwell version 1.0 test. Viral load values obtained with the COBAS version 1.5 test are lower than th...

BK virus (BKV) load in urine alone or in combination with acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) was correlated to development of hemorrhagic cystitis (HC). BKV load in combination with acute GVHD discriminated the best, while BKV and viral load alone, but not GVHD, still showed predictive ability for HC.

Both qualitative and quantitative virologic measurements were compared between blood and genital compartments for 128 men infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) to address several controversial issues concerning HIV-1 shedding in semen and to obtain further information about the distribution of virus between these two compartments. Evidence for viral compartmentalization was ...

BACKGROUND Respiratory virus infections are commonly associated with COPD exacerbations, but little is known about the mechanisms linking virus infection to exacerbations. Pathogenic mechanisms in stable COPD include oxidative and nitrosative stress and reduced activity of histone deacetylase-2 (HDAC2), but their roles in COPD exacerbations is unknown. We investigated oxidative and nitrosative ...

We use mathematical models to investigate the relationship between viral characteristics and virus load under the following immune responses: (a) CTL-mediated lysis, (b) CTLmediated inhibition of virus entry into target cells, (c) CTL-mediated inhibition of virion production and (d) antibody responses. We find that the rate of virus entry into target cells may generally only have a weak influen...
