In view of the extensive investigations carried on by Olitsky and Gates'' with reference to the causative agent in epidemic influenza, and particularly in view of the fact that the claims of these observers regarding the demonstration in material and cultures from influenzal patients of a filter-passing microorganism have been more or less confirmed by the reports of Gordon a in England, and Li...

We study the asymptotic behavior in time of the solutions of a system of nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations. We have two basic results: First, in the L@R3) norm, solutions decay like 0(t-3/2) as t/+ provided the initial data are sufficiently small. Finally we prove that finite energy solutions of such a system decay in local energy norm as t++.

We study the deformed kinematics of point particles in the Hořava theory of gravity. This is achieved by considering particles as the optical limit of fields with a generalized Klein-Gordon action. We derive the deformed geodesic equation and study in detail the cases of flat and spherically symmetric (Schwarzschild-like) spacetimes. As the theory is not invariant under local Lorenz transformat...

Ternary stress presents a unique challenge to constraint-based metrical stress theories. The main question is how to model ternarity without ternary-specific representations, such as ternary feet. Along this line of reasoning, Elenbaas and Kager (1999) interpret ternarity as an underparsing effect in which long lapses are avoided while the number of feet is kept to a minimum. The standard const...

The debate on deindustrialization assumes that domestic industry is a leading sector and produces positive externalities for the whole economy. This paper will partially refute this. Since the early 1990’s, most developed and emerging economies have been subjected to two paradoxes: the paradox of Solow, which calls into question the relationship between ICT investment and productivity gains, an...

Introduction The debate about the responsibility of museums to respect Indigenous peoples’ rights (Kelly and Gordon; Butts) has caught our attention on the basis of our previous research experience with regard to the protection of the tangible and intangible heritage of the San (former hunter gatherers) in Southern Africa (Martin and Vermeylen; Vermeylen, Contextualising; Vermeylen, Life Force;...

Surveillance can be based, in some change-point detection problems, on a sequence of invariant statistics. Gordon and Pollak (1997) prove that, under certain conditions, the Average Run Length (ARL) to false alarm of invariance-based Shiryayev-Roberts detection schemes is asymptotically the same as that of the dual classical scheme that is based on the original sequence of observations. In this...

Following our previous research on developing a dynamic virtual city system (Sheffield Urban Contextual Databank, SUCoD), the paper reports on a study of applying the virtual city resources to an undergraduate urban design course. The study focuses on how the multi-dimensional and multiple types of urban contextual data can be used by student designers directly for urban visual analysis and des...

This paper sets out to address the issue of equity duration, one of several risk measures available for asset and liability management. Equity duration, as derived from the use of traditional dividend discount models, results in extremely long duration estimates for equities often in excess of 50 years for growth stocks. Leibowitz, in his seminal paper (1986), identified an alternative framewor...

The most profound change in the relationship between humans and their environment was the introduction of agriculture and pastoralism. With this millennia lasting economic shift from simple food acquisition to complex food production humankind paved the way for its grand transitional process from mobile groups to sedentary villages, towns and ultimately cities, and from egalitarian bands to chi...
