We study the effects of coupling between layers of stochastic neural field models with laminar structure. In particular, we focus on how the propagation of waves of neural activity in each layer is affected by the coupling. Synaptic connectivities within and between each layer are determined by integral kernels of an integrodifferential equation describing the temporal evolution of neural activ...
Diffusion equations with degenerate nonlinear source terms arise in many different applications, e.g., in the theory of epidemics, in models of cortical spreading depression, and in models of evaporation and condensation in porous media. In this paper, we consider a generalization of these models to a system of n coupled diffusion equations with identical nonlinear source terms. We determine si...
We numerically investigate transverse stability and instability of so-called cnoidal waves, i.e., periodic traveling wave solutions of the Kortewegde Vries equation, under the time-evolution of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. In particular, we find that in KP-I small amplitude cnoidal waves are stable (at least for spatially localized perturbations) and only become unstable above a certain...
We investigated, using questionnaires, different strategies for removing drivers' overoptimism (Svenson et al., 2012a) about how fast their speed could be decreased when they were speeding compared with braking at the speed limit speed. Three different learning groups and a control group made collision speed judgments. The first learning group had the distance a car travels during a driver's re...
The most popular dispatching rule for double-track segments is to dedicate one track for trains traveling in one direction. However, today passenger trains are able to travel at a much faster speed compared to freight trains, but the limitation of the rail infrastructure makes it more cost effective to allow the passenger trains to share some portions of the railway tracks with the slower freig...
We have performed atomic simulations of crack propagation along a weak interface joining two harmonic crystals. The simulations show that a mode II shear dominated crack can accelerate to the Rayleigh wave speed and then nucleate an intersonic daughter that travels at the longitudinal wave speed. This contradicts the general belief that a crack can travel no faster than the Rayleigh speed.
Correspondence to: D. Levinson (e-mail: [email protected]) Abstract. This paper examines the full costs, defined as the sum of private and social costs, of a high-speed rail system proposed for a corridor connecting Los Angeles and San Francisco in California. The full costs include infrastructure, fleet capital and operating expenses, the time users spend on the system, and the soc...
Delay-induced destabilization of entrainment of nerve impulses on ephaptically coupled nerve fibers.
We study the effect of delay on the synchronization of two nerve impulses traveling along two ephaptically coupled, unmyelinated nerve fibers. The system is modeled as a pair of delay-coupled Fitzhugh-Nagumo equations. A multiple-scale perturbation approach is used for the analysis of these equations in the limit of weak coupling. In the absence of delay, two pulses with identical speeds are sh...
Received Sep 29, 2017 Revised Dec 27, 2017 Accepted Jan 17, 2018 Malaysia, railway is considered as the backbone of transport, connecting people from all across the country. With the current state of economy, more people prefer to choose train as main transportation especially in big city area such as Kuala Lumpur. With lower cost and relatively the safest form of transports compared to the oth...
