Following the introduction of fuzzy sets in 1965, a notion of fuzzy topological group was proposed by Foster in 1979: essentially he took a group and furnished it with a fuzzy topological structure. Known and new results on free Boolean topological groups are collected. An account of the properties that these groups share with free or free Abelian topological groups and properties specific to free Boolean groups is given. Special emphasis is placed on the application of set-theoretic methods to the study of Boolean topological groups.

A topological group is said to be ambitable if each uniformly bounded uniformly equicontinuous set of functions on the group with its right uniformity is contained in an ambit. For n = 0, 1, 2, . . ., every locally אn-bounded topological group is either precompact or ambitable. In the familiar semigroups constructed over ambitable groups, topological centres have an effective characterization.
