The frameworks of thermodynamic availability function and irreversible port Hamiltonian systems are used to derive passivity based control strategies for irreversible thermodynamic systems. An energy based availability function is defined using as generating function the internal energy. This is a variation with respect to previous works where the total entropy usually corresponds to the genera...

Within Tsallis’ nonextensive statistics, a model is elaborated to address self-similar time series as a thermodynamic system. Thermodynamic-type characteristics relevant to temperature, pressure, entropy, internal and free energies are introduced and tested. Stability conditions of time series analysis are discussed in details on the basis of Van der Waals model.

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of Hamiltonian mean-field(HMF) model as a prototypical long-range system by means of the non-extensive thermostatistics. Especially, the quasi-equilibrium state as extremum state of the generalized Tsallis entropy is studied and its thermodynamic stability is analyzed. Based on these analysis, the connection with quasi-stationary behaviors found in th...

This paper shows that any thermodynamic potential fulfilling some thermodynamic stability criterion (e.g. the chemical affinity or the ectropy) can be used as a potential function for the dissipative (pseudo) Port Hamiltonian formulation of the non isothermal Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) model. Besides Brayton-Moser formulation is used to obtain some dissipative Port Hamiltonian repre...

(Received 13 March 2006, Accepted 23 April 2006) The effects of the mechanical properties of DNA, such as bending, twisting, and bending-twisting interactions on the thermodynamic stability of DNA-dendronized polymer nanoclusters with different conformations in terms of free energy are investigated. The effect of temperature on the free energy is also studied and the values of enthalpy and ent...

By means of density functional theory and statistical mechanics, we investigate the geometric and electronic structures, thermodynamic stability and infrared (IR) vibrational frequencies of alkaline earth metal endohedral fullerenes, M@C(76) (M = Ca, Sr, and Ba). The results reveal that M@C(1)(17,459)-C(76) possesses the lowest energy followed by M@C(2v)(19,138)-C(76) with a very small energy d...

Somatic hypermutation and clonal selection lead to B cells expressing high-affinity antibodies. Here we show that somatic mutations not only play a critical role in antigen binding, they also affect the thermodynamic stability of the antibody molecule. Somatic mutations directly involved in antigen recognition by antibody 93F3, which binds a relatively small hapten, reduce the melting temperatu...

Proteins are important macromolecules that exhibit thermodynamic and kinetic properties that are highly tuned to facilitate biological function within limited ranges of environmental conditions. Despite having a wealth of understanding of the interactions that affect protein stability [Dill, 1990; Pace, et al. 2004], such as the hydrophobic effect, hydrogen bonding, packing, solvation and elect...
