Abstract A hybrid two-stage machine-learning architecture that addresses the problem of excessive false positives (false alarms) in solar flare prediction systems is investigated. The first stage a convolutional neural network (CNN) model based on VGG-16 extracts features from temporal stack consecutive Solar Dynamics Observatory Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager magnetogram images to produce fl...

The continuous emission spectra of Hα, Hβ, and Hγ wave bands of the solar flare of 5 July 1989 have been analysed. We demonstrate that the flare not only emits at the line centres and wings of Hα, Hβ, and Hγ, but also in the continuum near these lines. The positions, durations, and configurations of the four flare kernels are respectively similar to those of a white light flare (WLF). Therefore...

We present the temporal and spectral study of blazar PKS 0208-512, using recent flaring activity from November 2019 to May 2020, as detected by Fermi-LAT observatory. The contemporaneous X-ray, optical/UV observations Swift-XRT/UVOT are also used. During state, 2-days binned ${\gamma}$-ray lightcurve shows multiple peaks indicating sub-flares. To understand possible physical mechanisms behind f...

We report a statistical study of flares observed with the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) onboard Yohkoh in the year of 2000. We measure physical parameters of 77 flares, such as the temporal scale, the size, and the magnetic flux density and find that the sizes of flares tend to be distributed more broadly as the GOES class becomes weaker and that there is a lower limit of magnetic flux density tha...

In the framework of solar flare/coronal mass ejection theory, we propose a theoretical model for magnetar giant flare, which can explain the flaring activity on 2004 December 27 from SGR1806-20 comprehensively. As is the case with solar flare, explosive magnetic reconnection in magnetosphere takes a major role in the energetics of magnetar flare. However, cooling and energy transport processes ...

Before the onset of a flare is observed in hard X-rays there is often a prolonged pre-flare or pre-heating phase with no detectable hard X-ray emission but pronounced soft X-ray emission suggesting that energy is being released and deposited into the corona and chromosphere already at this stage. This work analyses the temporal evolution of coronal source heating and the chromospheric response ...

OBJECTIVE To determine the level of agreement of disease flare severity (distinguishing severe, moderate, and mild flare and persistent disease activity) in a large paper-patient exercise involving 988 individual cases of systemic lupus erythematosus. METHODS A total of 988 individual lupus case histories were assessed by 3 individual physicians. Complete agreement about the degree of flare (...
