The CLSI M100-S19 document has recommended the disuse of vancomycin disks for staphylococci and informed that studies on the action of teicoplanin in disk-diffusion testing should be performed. We describe the comparison of two methods, disk diffusion and broth microdilution, for determining teicoplanin susceptibility in clinical isolates of staphylococci. Overall results showed an aggregation ...

Glycopeptides of the clinically important antibiotic drugs are glycosylated cyclic or polycyclic nonribosomal peptides. Glycopeptides such as vancomycin and teicoplanin are often used for the treatment of gram-positive bacteria in patients. The increased incidence of drug resistance and inadequacy of these therapeutics against gram-positive bacterial infections would be the formation and clinic...

A significant number of open and comparative studies have now addressed the use of teicoplanin in the treatment of documented or presumed infection in patients with haematological and non-haematological malignancy. Available evidence suggests that teicoplanin is an effective agent against such infections, with an excellent safety profile. The use of teicoplanin and vancomycin may be justified a...

With the aim of investigating home therapy for enterococcal endocarditis, we compared the efficacy of teicoplanin combined with gentamicin given once a day or in three daily doses (t.i.d.) with the standard treatment, ampicillin plus gentamicin administered t.i.d., for treating experimental enterococcal endocarditis. The antibiotics were administered by using "human-like pharmacokinetics" (H-L)...

Ureteral stents coated with the quorum-sensing inhibitor RNAIII-inhibiting peptide (RIP) were implanted in rat bladders and shown to suppress Staphylococcus aureus formation on the stent and in urine and was especially effective when combined with teicoplanin. Coating ureteral stents with RIP thus increases the efficacy of teicoplanin in preventing ureteral stent-associated staphylococcal infec...

Against 307 pneumococci of various resistotypes, dalbavancin MICs were 0.008 to 0.125 microg/ml. All strains were susceptible to vancomycin, teicoplanin, linezolid, and quinupristin-dalfopristin. Dalbavancin at 2x MIC was bactericidal against all 10 pneumococci tested after 24 h. Vancomycin and teicoplanin killed 10 and 8 strains, respectively, at 2x MIC after 24 h.

Patients with blood cultures positive for gram-positive cocci were enrolled in a prospective randomized double-blind comparative trial of vancomycin at 15 mg/kg every 12 h versus teicoplanin at 6 mg/kg every 12 h for three doses and then 6 mg/kg every 24 h. A total of 54 patients were randomized, and 40 were evaluable. Of the 40, 9 had infection of indwelling vascular catheters. Four infections...

Teicoplanin is an investigational glycopeptide antibiotic that is structurally and microbiologically similar to vancomycin. Since teicoplanin possesses a very long elimination half-life, the manufacturer suggests that the drug be administered every 12 h for the first day of therapy and once daily thereafter. We studied the multiple-dose (6 mg/kg per dose) pharmacokinetics of teicoplanin in volu...

Of 41 methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococcal clinical isolates collected during a 5-month period between late 1995 and early 1996, 28 showed tube dilution teicoplanin MICs of 4 to 8 microg/ml which increased to 16 to 32 microg/ml upon prolonged incubation. Cultures of such bacteria were heterogeneous; they contained subpopulations with frequencies of 10(-5) to 10(-4) that could...

The inactivation of TcaA contributes to intrinsic teicoplanin resistance in experimental and clinical isolates of glycopeptide-intermediate resistant Staphylococcus aureus. PhoA fusions confirmed that TcaA is a transmembrane protein with a short intracellular N-terminal domain containing a C-4 zinc finger binding motif, a single membrane-spanning domain, and a large extracellular C-terminal dom...
