Objectives: A modified Blalock-Taussig (mBT) shunt procedure is a common palliative surgery used to treat infants and children with cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD). This study aimed report the outcomes of undergoing mBT procedures in Oman. In addition, risk factors associated early mortality, inter-stage mortality reintervention were assessed. Methods: retrospective cohort was conducte...
In this study, hemodynamic performance of three novel shunt configurations that are considered for the surgical repair of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) disease are investigated in detail. Clinical experience suggests that the shunt location, connecting angle, and its diameter can influence the post-operative physiology and the neurodevelopment of the neonatal patient. An experimentally validated se...
BACKGROUND The Norwood procedure consists of three palliative operations, performed in neonates with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Especially the first stage (Norwood I) is associated with the highest mortality rates in paediatric cardiac surgery (up to 25%). During surgery, the aorta is reconstructed and a systemic-to-pulmonary shunt is applied. Originally the modified Blalock-Taussig shunt...
Cyanotic congenital heart defects (CCHD) with severe pulmonary stenosis or atresia exhibit hypoxemia and cyanosis secondary to pulmonary oligemia and right-to-left shunt. Even though a substantial proportion of these patients can be surgically corrected at presentation, such correction is not feasible in some patients either because of the age and size of the patient at presentation or because ...
or atresia. Seventy-one per cent of the infant group and 90% of patients over 1 year of age were long-term survivors (up to 6 years). Tetralogy of Fallot was the most commonly encountered anomaly in all 141 patients (66%); transposition of the great vessels and pulmonary stenosis occurred in 18%; and tricuspid atresia with pulmonary stenosis in 10%. The presence of an excessively large shunt an...
The fatal outcome in an eleven-year-old girl, one month after an extra-cardiac Fontan operation is reported. She was diagnosed with tricuspid atresia and had a Blalock Taussig shunt and a bidirectional Glenn procedure. The Fontan operation was performed using a Dacron conduit, fenestrated with a 6 mm Goretex tube. The first week after the operation she received low molecular weight heparin, the...
A 24-year-old woman with a history of unrepaired tetralogy of Fallot was scheduled to undergo laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Her significant history included tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia, hypoplastic left pulmonary artery, pulmonary vascular obstructive disease, a functioning right subclavian artery to right pulmonary artery shunt (modified Blalock-Taussig palliative procedure) wit...
We report our experience with stenting of the ductus arteriosus in three neonates. Two patients had pulmonary atresia with an intact interventricular septum and one had critical pulmonary stenosis. Radiofrequency ablation was used to open the atretic pulmonary valve in two patients. In all three patients implanting a stent avoided the need for surgical creation of a Blalock-Taussig shunt. In tw...
