Biogas production from sugarcane waste has large potential for energy generation, however, to enable the optimization of the anaerobic digestion (AD) process each substrate characteristic should be carefully evaluated. In this study, the kinetic challenges for biogas production from different types of sugarcane waste were assessed. Samples of vinasse, filter cake, bagasse, and straw were analyz...

The RT-CaCCO process for enzymatic saccharification was applied to readily-milled fractions of wet sugarcane bagasse. Wet bagasse immediately after juice extraction was crushed with shark-mill blades to prepare two fractions referred to as readily-milled (RF) and hardly-milled fraction (HF). Monosaccharide recoveries from RFs via the RT-CaCCO process were 1.03-1.21 times higher than those from ...

BACKGROUND Pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass is a prerequisite for effective saccharification to produce fermentable sugars. In this study, "green" solvent systems based on acidified mixtures of glycerol carbonate (GC) and glycerol were used to treat sugarcane bagasse and the roles of each solvent in deconstructing biomass were determined. RESULTS Pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse at 90...

Fermentable components of municipal solid wastes (MSW) such as fruit and vegetable wastes (FVW), leaf litter, paddy straw, cane bagasse, cane trash and paper are generated in large quantities at various pockets of the city. These form potential feedstocks for decentralized biogas plants to be operated in the vicinity. We characterized the fermentation potential of six of the above MSW fractions...

We determined the genome sequence of a thermotolerant yeast, Kluyveromyces marxianus strain DMB1, isolated from sugarcane bagasse hydrolysate, and the sequence provides further insights into the genomic differences between this strain and other reported K. marxianus strains. The genome described here is composed of 11,165,408 bases and has 4,943 protein-coding genes.

Sugarcane bagasse contains cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose, 39-42%, 20-25% and 25-27% respectively. So it is can be used as a sugar source in many processes. Lignin and hemicellulose must be removed before hydrolysis of cellulose. Several different pretreatment approaches have been studied. The purpose of this research is comparison of acid, ozone and combination of ozone-acid as pretreatme...

Background The Bacillus subtilis endo-β-1,4-glucanase (BsCel5A) hydrolyzes β-1,3-1,4-linked glucan, and the enzyme includes a family 3 carbohydrate-binding module (CBM3) that binds β-1,4-linked glucan. Methods Here we investigate the BsCel5A β-1,3-1,4 glucanase activity after exchanging the CBM3 domain for the family 11 CBM from Ruminiclostridium thermocellum celH (RtCBM11) having β-1,3-1,4 g...

BACKGROUND The description of new hydrolytic enzymes is an important step in the development of techniques which use lignocellulosic materials as a starting point for fuel production. Sugarcane bagasse, which is subjected to pre-treatment, hydrolysis and fermentation for the production of ethanol in several test refineries, is the most promising source of raw material for the production of seco...

The fiber characteristics (i.e., the fiber type, morphology, and dimension) and polymer melt flow index (MFI) significantly affected mechanical properties of sugarcane fiber/HDPE composites. The length and diameter of sugarcane fibers followed a lognormal distribution before and after compounding. The long fibers had a significant reduction in the dimension and aspect ratio during compounding. ...
