Obesity is a primary risk factor for the development of obstructive sleep apnea in humans, but the impact of obesity on central sleep apnea is less clear. Given the comorbidities associated with obesity in humans, we developed techniques for long-term recording of diaphragmatic EMG activity and polysomnography in obese mice to assess breathing patterns during sleep and to determine the effect o...
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE Diaphragmatic activity varies with the initial length of the muscle. Our objective was to evaluate the influence of surgery and changes in abdominal wall compliance on diaphragmatic activity. METHODS Both phrenic nerves in 7 mongrel dogs were stimulated electrically with single supramaximal pulses (twitch). The gastric (Pga) and transdiaphragmatic (Pdi) pressures ge...
The effects of transient blood pressure elevation, induced by intravenous injection of phenylephrine, were studied in drug-free, unrestrained cats during sleep and waking. Transient hypertension evoked an increase in respiratory cycle duration (Ttot), an effect which was most prominent during quiet sleep. Transient hypertension evoked no overall change in inspiratory duration (Tdi) during any s...
PURPOSE To evaluate the tissue integration of a double-sided mesh after fixation in diaphragm and to study the diaphragmatic mobility by ultrasound. METHODS Twenty male Wistar rats were used. The animals were assigned into two equal groups according to the day of euthanasia. The animals were anesthetized and a 1.5 x 1.5 cm of double-layer mesh was inserted between the diaphragm and the liver....
Objective: To compare the diaphragmatic mobility of healthy subjects during incentive spirometry with a volumeoriented device, during incentive spirometry with a flow-oriented device, and during diaphragmatic breathing. To compare men and women in terms of diaphragmatic mobility during these three types of breathing exercises. Methods: We evaluated the pulmonary function and diaphragmatic mobil...
Introduction: Introduction: The respiratory system affects the motor control and stability of the body, especially in the elderly. The present study aimed to determine the effect of diaphragmatic breathing practice on respiratory function, balance, and quality of life in elderly women. Materials and Methods: Forty elderly women with a mean age of 72.40 years participated in this study voluntari...
Iatrogenic right diaphragmatic hernia is very rare. We report the first case of a patient who had a diaphragmatic hernia after laparoscopic fenestration of liver cyst. A herniorrhaphy of the diaphragmatic defect was carried out after reducing the herniated organ. The postoperative course was uneventful. Diaphragmatic hernias are not as common as the traumatic type. Surgeons can easily miss diap...
We present a 45-year-old female patient who developed diaphragmatic rupture and secondary hernia following a diaphragmatic resection for a diaphragmatic abnormality with spontaneous pneumothorax performed by endoscopic stapling in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). This complication can be avoided by careful direct repair of the diaphragmatic incision in addition to endoscopic stapling.
Diaphragmatic hernia in the absence of trauma is very rare in adults. The literature describes less than a dozen such cases of right-sided diaphragmatic hernia .We present a rare case of spontaneous right side diaphragmatic hernia in adult patient without any h/o trauma. The Patient presented with acute pain abdomen, distention, vomiting and obstipation. Radiological investigations confirmed ac...
