This paper describes our phrase-based statistical machine translation system (CASIA) used in the evaluation campaign of the International Workshop on Spoken Language Translation (IWSLT) 2007. In this year's evaluation, we participated in the open data track of clean text for the Chinese-to-English machine translation. Here, we mainly introduce the overview of the system, the primary modules, th...

In this paper we describe the statistical machine translation system of the Universität Karlsruhe developed for the translation task of the Fourth Workshop on Statistical Machine Translation. The state-ofthe-art phrase-based SMT system is augmented with alternative word reordering and alignment mechanisms as well as optional phrase table modifications. We participate in the constrained conditio...

This paper describes the system we built for the Chinese to English track of the IWSLT 2004 evaluation campaign. A one month effort was devoted to this exercise, starting from scratch and making use as much as possible of freely available packages. We show that a decent phrase-based translation engine can be built within this short time frame.

This paper describes the CMU-UKA statistical machine translation systems submitted to the IWSLT 2007 evaluation campaign. Systems were submitted for three language-pairs: Japanese→English, Chinese→English and Arabic→English. All systems were based on a common phrase-based SMT (statistical machine translation) framework but for each language-pair a specific research problem was tackled. For Japa...

The Workshop on Statistical Machine Translation (WMT) has become one of ACL’s flagship workshops, held annually since 2006. In addition to soliciting papers from the research community, WMT also features a shared translation task for evaluating MT systems. This shared task is notable for having manual evaluation as its cornerstone. The Workshop’s overview paper, playing a descriptive and admini...

RWTH participated in the shared translation task of the Fourth Workshop of Statistical Machine Translation (WMT 2009) with the German-English, French-English and Spanish-English pair in each translation direction. The submissions were generated using a phrase-based and a hierarchical statistical machine translation systems with appropriate morpho-syntactic enhancements. POS-based reorderings of...

This paper reports translation results for the “Exploiting Parallel Texts for Statistical Machine Translation” (HLT-NAACL Workshop on Parallel Texts 2006). We have studied different techniques to improve the standard Phrase-Based translation system. Mainly we introduce two reordering approaches and add morphological information.

English to Indian language machine translation poses the challenge of structural and morphological divergence. This paper describes English to Indian language statistical machine translation using pre-ordering and suffix separation. The pre-ordering uses rules to transfer the structure of the source sentences prior to training and translation. This syntactic restructuring helps statistical mach...

Current statistical machine translation systems handle the translation process as the transformation of a string of symbols into another string of symbols. Normally the symbols dealt with are the words in different languages, sometimes with some additional information included, like morphological data. In this work we try to push the approach to the limit, working not on the level of words, but...

Nowadays, most of the statistical translation systems are based on phrases (i.e. groups of words). In this paper we study different improvements to the standard phrase-based translation system. We describe a modified method for the phrase extraction which deals with larger phrases while keeping a reasonable number of phrases. We also propose additional features which lead to a clear improvement...
