We examined the feasibility of using DNA extracted from stained sputum smears for the detection of rifampin and isoniazid resistance with the commercial MTBDRplus assay from Hain Lifescience GmbH, Nehren, Germany. Overall sensitivity was initially low (70.0%) but increased to 96.7% when a multiplex PCR preamplification step was added. We then tested stored Mycobacterium tuberculosis-positive st...

The diagnosis of disseminated toxoplasmosis in a 14-year-old allogeneic bone marrow recipient with graft-versus-host disease was determined by the detection of Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites in sputum smears. Sputum analysis is a valuable alternative in the clinical assessment of pulmonary toxoplasmosis, especially when conventional invasive techniques are not practicable.

Early diagnosis plays a vital role in controlling tuberculosis. The conventional methodology is slow, with results taking several weeks, in addition to having low sensitivity, especially in clinical paucibacillary samples. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on solid medium culture for a rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis, mainly in cases of negat...

INTRODUCTION High quality sputum helps increase the sensitivity of the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficiency of the acoustic device (Lung Flute; LF) in sputum induction compared with the conventional method, hypertonic saline inhalation (HSI). METHODS In this crossover study, patients with presumed pulmonary tuberculosis submitted 3 consecutive sputa: th...

RATIONALE Chest radiography is sometimes the only method available for investigating patients with possible pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) with negative sputum smears. However, interpretation of chest radiographs in this context lacks specificity for PTB, is subjective and is neither standardized nor reproducible. Efforts to improve the interpretation of chest radiography are warranted. OBJECTI...

Background: There are data about the relationship between morphologic findings on HRCT and the number of acid-fast bacilli (AFB) on sputum smears in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). It was also shown that existence of cavities and airspace consolidation might be related to smear positivity in PTB patients. However there is no study suggesting a relationship between AFB on sputum smea...
