A construction of convex flag triangulations of five and higher dimensional spheres, whose h-polynomials fail to have only real roots, is given. We show that there is no such example in dimensions lower than five. A condition weaker than realrootedness is conjectured and some evidence is provided. Let the f-polynomial fX of a simplicial complex X be defined by the formula fX(t) := ∑
Homotopy type of partially ordered sets (poset for short) play a crucial role in algebraic topology. In fact, every space is weakly equivalent to a simplicial complex which, of course, can be considered as a poset. Posets also arise in more specific contexts as homological decompositions [10, 6, 16, 20] and subgroups complexes associated to finite groups [7, 26, 4]. The easy structure of a pose...
This paper is an exposition of the ideas and methods of Cisinksi, in the context of A-presheaves on a small Grothendieck site, where A is an arbitrary test category in the sense of Grothendieck. The homotopy theory for the category of simplicial presheaves and each of its localizations can be modelled by A-presheaves in the sense that there is a corresponding model structure for A-presheaves wi...
We study the multiscale simplicial flat norm (MSFN) problem, which computes flat norm at various scales of sets defined as oriented subcomplexes of finite simplicial complexes in arbitrary dimensions. We show that the multiscale simplicial flat norm is NP-complete when homology is defined over integers. We cast the multiscale simplicial flat norm as an instance of integer linear optimization. F...
We discuss below some problems concerning a certain class of algebras of operators on complex Banach space. Each algebra of the class arises from a lattice of subspaces of the underlying space (in a way that will soon be made precise) and most of the problems are of the fonn: find conditions, additional to those specified a priori, on the lattice of subspaces, which are both necessary and suffi...
Among shellable complexes a certain class is shown to have maximal modular homology, and these are the so-called saturated complexes. We show that certain conditions on the links of the complex imply saturation. We prove that Coxeter complexes and buildings are saturated. © 2002 Elsevier Science (USA)
Let f(d) = (fs, fi, . . . . fd,) be the f-vector of a Cohen-Macaulay complex A. Bjijrner proved that (*) fief++, for any O<ii[d/2] and (**) f0 Q fi < < fr+ i rP1. Recently, Stanley generalized Bjorner’s inequalities (*) and (**) for pure simplicial complexes. In this paper we consider O-sequence analogue of the inequalities (*) and (**). Let (ha, h,, . . . . h,), h,#O, is a pure O-sequence. We ...
In this article, we study two open problems posed by Edelman & Reiner about topology of certain simplicial complexes associated with abstract convex geometries. As a special case, we concentrate on generalized convex shellings, which were introduced by Kashiwabara, Nakamura & Okamoto for their representation theorem of abstract convex geometries. We answer one of the problems affirmatively for ...
We prove that if a simplicial complex ∆ is shellable, then the intersection lattice L∆ for the corresponding diagonal arrangement A∆ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. Furthermore, we describe precisely the spheres in the wedge, based on the data of shelling. Also, we give some examples of diagonal arrangements A where the complement MA is K(π, 1), coming from rank 3 matroids.
The Laplace operator on a simplicial complex encodes information about the adjacencies between simplices. A relationship between simplicial complexes does not always translate to a relationship between their Laplacians. In this paper we look at the case of covering complexes. A covering of a simplicial complex is built from many copies of simplices of the original complex, maintaining the adjac...
