Coupled systems can exhibit an unusual kind of multistability, namely, the coexistence of infinitely many attractors for a given set of parameters. This extreme multistability is demonstrated to occur in coupled chemical model systems with various types of coupling. We show that the appearance of extreme multistability is associated with the emergence of a conserved quantity in the long-term li...

U.S. welfare reforms will add one to two million persons to the labor force from 19932005. Because this increase in labor supply is only about one percent of the U.S. labor force, it is unlikely that welfare reform will have sizable effects on overall U.S. wages or unemployment. However, a variety of economic models suggest that welfare reform will significantly reduce the real earnings of some...

This paper studies group selection for the partially linear model with a diverging number of parameters. We propose an adaptive group bridge method and study the consistency, convergence rate and asymptotic distribution of the global adaptive group bridge estimator under regularity conditions. Simulation studies and a real example show the finite sample performance of our method.

We have determined the hydrogen-bond geometry in liquid water from 0 to 80 degrees C by combining measurements of the proton magnetic shielding tensor with ab initio density functional calculations. The resulting moments of the distributions of hydrogen-bond length and angle are direct measures of thermal disorder in the hydrogen-bond network. These moments, and the distribution functions that ...

Predictive developmental hypotheses play a crucial role in developmental theories. These hypotheses link early developmental behaviors or processes to later developmental outcomes. Empirical tests of predictive developmental hypotheses are generally based on standard regression models. It is argued that hierarchical linear models or longitudinal multilevel models offer a better alternative. A m...

We study two chemical models for pattern formation in growing plant tips. For hemisphere radius and parameter values together optimal for spherical surface harmonic patterns of index l = 3, the Brusselator model gives an 84% probability of dichotomous branching pattern and 16% of annular pattern, while the hyperchirality model gives 88% probability of dichotomous branching and 12% of annular pa...

Consider non-atomic vector measure games; i.e., games u of the form u = f o(pI.. . ,p.), where (pIr.. .,p.) is a vector of non-atomic non-negative measures and f is a real-valued function defined on the range of (pi,. . .,pi.). Games of this form arise, for example, from production models and from finite-type markets. We show that the value of such a game need not be a linear combination of the...

This article explores the possibility that romantic love is an attachment process--a biosocial process by which affectional bonds are formed between adult lovers, just as affectional bonds are formed earlier in life between human infants and their parents. Key components of attachment theory, developed by Bowlby, Ainsworth, and others to explain the development of affectional bonds in infancy, ...

Policies to promote public health and welfare often fail or worsen the problems they are intended to solve. Evidence-based learning should prevent such policy resistance, but learning in complex systems is often weak and slow. Complexity hinders our ability to discover the delayed and distal impacts of interventions, generating unintended "side effects." Yet learning often fails even when stron...
