Tissue samples comprising the oesophagus and diaphragm were collected from 400 sheep and 400 goats slaughtered at the abattoirs in the study area. Out of this number, 36 were positive for Sarcocystis cysts (sarcocysts) in sheep and 56 in goats. The sarcocysts in sheep measured 35.7 to 500 microns lengthwise and the cyst-wall 2.4 microns. They were identified to be Sarcocystis tenella. The cysts...

The coccidians Frenkelia microti and F. glareoli (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae) form tissue cysts in the brain of small rodents (intermediate hosts) while oocysts are formed in the intestine of final hosts, buzzards of the genus Buteo. The inclusion of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences (SSU rRNA) of both Frenkelia species into the SSU rRNA trees of other, tissue cyst-forming coccidia...

UNLABELLED Sarcocystis neurona is a member of the coccidia, a clade of single-celled parasites of medical and veterinary importance including Eimeria, Sarcocystis, Neospora, and Toxoplasma. Unlike Eimeria, a single-host enteric pathogen, Sarcocystis, Neospora, and Toxoplasma are two-host parasites that infect and produce infectious tissue cysts in a wide range of intermediate hosts. As a genus,...

Cyst-forming coccidia of the genus Sarcocystis (Alveolata: Apicomplexa: Coccidea) parasitize vertebrates worldwide. Data from the small subunit rRNA genes (SSU) and the D2 domain of the large subunit rRNA genes were used to reconstruct phylogeny for all species in the Sarcocystidae for which sequences are currently available. We have focused on the evolutionary history of species that circulate...

A cross-sectional survey was performed to estimate the prevalences of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii (ELISA, IFAT), Sarcocystis spp. (ELISA, using S. miescheriana as antigen) and Neospora caninum (ELISA, immunoblotting) in sows from breeding farms in southern Hesse, Germany. A total of 2041 plasma samples of sows from 94 randomly selected farms was examined. Data on farm profiles, husbandry ma...

Neospora caninum, Sarcocystis spp, and Toxoplasma gondii are related coccidian parasites that can cause abortion and neonatal mortality in animals. In addition, T gondii and certain species of Sarcocystis are zoonotic. This article reviews information on the etiology, diagnosis, control, and prevention of these diseases.
