E&ES101 Dynamic Earth The earth is a dynamic planet, as tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions make tragically clear. The very processes that lead to these natural disasters, however, also make life itself possible and create things of beauty and wonder. In this course we will study the forces and processes that shape our natural environment. Topics range in scale from the gl...

In this paper, we study fault-tolerant multicasting in multistage interconnection networks (MINs) for constructing large-scale multicomputers. In addition to point-to-point routing among processor nodes, efficient multicasting is critical to the performance of multicomputers. This paper presents a new approach to provide fault-tolerance multicasting, which employs the restricted header encoding...

We show a correlation between the occurrence of shallow thrust earthquakes and the occurrence of the strongest tides. The rate of earthquakes varies from the background rate by a factor of 3 with the tidal stress. The highest correlation is found when we assume a coefficient of friction of mu = 0.4 for the crust, although we see good correlation for mu between 0.2 and 0.6. Our results quantify ...

This paper improves upon the state of the art in testing word oriented memories. It first presents a complete set of fault models for intra-word coupling faults. Then, it establishes the data background sequence (DBS) for each intraword coupling fault. These DBSs will be compiled into a (1+ 28 blog2Bc) n B test with complete fault coverage of the target faults, where n is the size of the memory...

The Archive for the Earth Observing System (EOS) is one of the largest and highest data rate archives in the world. The EOS Archive is referred to as EOS Core System (ECS) and is a multi-site distributed data warehouse of Earth-oriented satellite images and science algorithms/reports. Its data holdings are projected to approach five petabytes by 2002. Each distributed site is referred to as a “...

Self-stabilization is an versatile approach to fault-tolerance since it permits a distributed system to recover from any transient fault that arbitrarily corrupts the contents of all memories in the system. Byzantine tolerance is an attractive feature of distributed system that permits to cope with arbitrary malicious behaviors. We consider the well known problem of constructing a maximum metri...
