We present here an optical add-drop filter (ADF) design based on ultra-compact photonic crystal ring resonators (PCRRs). The normalized transmission spectra for single-ring and dual-ring configurations have been investigated by using the two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique in a square lattice dielectric-rod photonic-crystal structure. With the introduction of four sca...

We demonstrate a silicon photonic platform using thin buried oxide silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates using localized substrate removal. We show high confinement silicon strip waveguides, micro-ring resonators and nanotapers using this technology. Propagation losses for the waveguides using the cutback method are 3.88 dB/cm for the quasi-TE mode and 5.06 dB/cm for the quasi-TM mode. Ring res...

We investigate narrowband transmission filters based on subwavelength-grating reflectors at normal incidence. Computational results show that the filtering is realized through symmetry-protected mode coupling. The guided mode resonances introduced by the slab layer allow flexible control of the filter frequencies. The quality factor of the filters could exceed 106. Dielectric gratings can be us...

We calculate the areal density of disorder-induced resonators with a high quality factor, Q>>1, in a film with fluctuating refraction index. We demonstrate that, for a given kl>1, where k is the light wave vector and l is the transport mean-free path, when on average the light propagation is diffusive, the likelihood for finding a random resonator increases dramatically with increasing the corr...

A new photonic crystal structure is generated by using a regular graphite lattice as the base and adding a slot in the center of each unit cell to enhance field confinement. The theoretical Q factor in an ideal structure is over 4 × 10(5). The structure was fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator wafer and optically characterized by transmission spectroscopy. The resonance wavelength and quality f...

The aim of the article is to identify the main interlocutors and areas of definition of the notion of television quality. The notion of quality as applied to television enables us to introduce a significant range of nuances that contribute to the debate on the aims and purposes of public television. Special emphasis is placed on the development undergone by the diversity factor as synonymous wi...

Low-loss waveguides constitute an important building block for integrated photonic systems. In this work, we investigated low-loss photonic device fabrication in Ge23Sb7S70 chalcogenide glass using electron beam lithography followed by plasma dry etching. High-index-contrast waveguides with a low propagation loss of 0.5 dB/cm and microdisk resonators with an int...

We demonstrate a 165-mu;m oblate spheroidal microcavity with a free spectral range of 383.7 GHz (3.06 nm), a resonance bandwidth of 23 MHz (quality factor Q approximately 10(7)) at 1550 nm, and finesse F>/=10(4) . The highly oblate spheroidal dielectric microcavity combines a very high Q factor, typical of microspheres, with a vastly reduced number of excited whispering-gallery modes (by 2 orde...

We propose a design for high quality factor two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal cavities on silicon-on-insulator (SOI). A quality factor of up to 1.2×10(7) with a modal volume of 2.35(λ/n)(3) is simulated. A very high quality factor of 200,000 is experimentally demonstrated for a 2D cavity fabricated on SOI.

Elastic and anelastic properties of a member of the BiFeO3-CaFeO2.5 perovskite solid solution (BCFO), which is known to have multiple instabilities, have been investigated by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. This phase, with 64% Bi and 36% Ca on the A site, is antiferromagnetic (TN ∼650 K) and has an ordered arrangement of oxygen vacancies with tetragonal lattice geometry. The inverse mechanic...
