PURPOSE To determine the utility of a child's first grade refractive error and parental history of myopia as predictors of myopia onset between the second and eighth grades. METHODS Subjects were nonmyopic children in the first grade who were enrolled in the Collaborative Longitudinal Evaluation of Ethnicity and Refractive Error (CLEERE) Study. Myopia was defined as -0.75 D or more myopia in ...
The temporal interval between flashing lights that is required to perceive nonsimultaneity decreases as the refractive error increases from 0 to +2 diopters. The interval then remains constant with further increases to 3 and 4 diopters. The results are discussed in terms of the relative increase of transient to sustained visual channels and of the increase in apparent movement.
Myopes of low degree commonly report that their vision seems poorer upon removal of their spectacles compared to that after a period without spectacle wear. Notably, this difference in vision can be appreciated after distance fixation. In this paper, we propose and test several alternative hypotheses to explain the phenomenon: an accommodative response to spectacles, sensory adaptation, or alte...
From a study of a large number of brothers and sisters suffering from concomitant squint, the following data were obtained: (1) 42-9% of the patients showed congenital strabismus. (2) In 96-5% of the sibs strabismus was of the same type. (3) The presence of a significant refractive error occurred in 82-8% of the patients. (4) In all twins strabismus appeared at the same age in both twins, and t...
Traditional treatment of amblyopia, although still in use and of great value, has recently been challenged by data from studies relative to efficacy of different modalities and regimens of therapy. LogMAR-based acuity charts should be used, whenever possible, for diagnosis and monitoring. Refractive errors of certain magnitude should be prescribed, and correction worn for at least 4 months befo...
Background and purpose: Astigmatism is a common optical dysfunction, effective on various visual outcomes and one of the important criteria of refractive surgery. The aim of present study was to evaluate the correlation between refractive, corneal and residual astigmatism in refractive surgery candidates. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive, analytical study, 200 patient...
The myopic growth process has the potential to modify both the optical and neural performance of the eye. We provide three simple models, based on different types of retinal stretching, to predict changes in neural resolution resulting from axial length increases in myopia. These predictions are compared to visual acuity (VA) measures in 34 subjects with refractive errors ranging from plano to ...
PURPOSE To measure the degree of transient axial elongation during the accommodation response in emmetropic and myopic young adults. To evaluate the effect of refractive error and accommodative demand on transient axial elongation of the eye. METHODS Axial length of the right eye was measured in 30 emmetropes and 30 myopes, by using the IOLMaster (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc., Dublin, CA), while ...
PURPOSE To determine the changing prevalence of myopia during the years 1990 through 2002 among the 16- to 22-year age group and identify possible risk factors. METHODS A retrospective study, based on 13 repeated prevalence surveys conducted over a 13-year period. The study subjects were all Israeli nationals belonging to the 16- to 22-year age group from the years 1990 to 2002. Refraction wa...
