We describe a demonstration system built upon Topic Detection and Tracking (TDT) technology. The demonstration system monitors a stream of news stories, organizes them into clusters that represent topics, presents the clusters to a user, and visually describes the changes that occur in those clusters over time. A user may also mark certain clusters as interesting, so that they can be “tracked” ...

The distribution of cone photopigment across the retina affects the amount of light captured by cones at each retinal location. Cone photopigment optical density is measured in two ways, with reflectometry and/or with color matching. Color matching measures a higher optical density than does reflectometry. Control experiments confirm that large-field color matches measure photopigment optical d...

This paper presents a new approach for measuring dielectric properties of materials. The proposed approach is based on applying the synthetic time domain reflectometry to a dielectric filled waveguide. The compromising measurement results show that this algorithm can be successfully applied for measuring other parameters of the materials. Also, the approach has been successfully applied to dete...

In this paper, we present the Software PARIS Interferometric Receiver (SPIR), a high-speed GNSS reflectometry recording receiver which has been designed and implemented with the primary goal of demonstrating the synoptic capabilities of the interferometric technique in GNSS Reflectrometry. Thanks to the use of large bandwidth GNSS signals, this technique is advantageous in comparison to the so-...

The use of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals for remote sensing applications, generally referred to as GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R), is gaining increasing interest among the scientific community as a remote sensing tool for land applications. This paper describes a long term experimental campaign in which an extensive dataset of GNSS-R polarimetric measurements was acquired over...

This paper proposes sensors based on the time-domain reflectometry (TDR) technique for qualifying ethanol fuel. Four different probe geometries were proposed: bifilar, microstrip, coaxial, and helical. All probes allowed qualification of ethanol adulterated with water. Helical probe showed the best response. Thus, this proposal contributes to the development of electronic tongues.

Moisture content in the soil and snow in the alpine environment is an important factor, not only for environmentally oriented research, but also for decision making in agriculture and hazard management. Current observation techniques quantifying soil moisture or characterizing a snow pack often require dedicated instrumentation that measures either at point scale or at very large (satellite pix...

Soil water content is a key variable for understanding and modelling ecohydrological processes. Low-cost electromagnetic sensors are increasingly being used to characterize the spatio-temporal dynamics of soil water content, despite the reduced accuracy of such sensors as compared to reference electromagnetic soil water content sensing methods such as time domain reflectometry. Here, we present...

The interferometric Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (iGNSS-R) exploits the full spectrum of the transmitted GNSS signal to improve the ranging performance for sea surface height applications. The Inter-Modulation (IM) component of the GNSS signals is an additional component that keeps the power envelope of the composite signals constant. This extra component has been neglected ...
