A rapid procedure for the separation of phospholipids of lung tissue into acidic and nonacidic fractions by means of diethylaminoethyl cellulose acetate microcolumns is described. The fractions are then resolved into individual phospholipids by thin-layer chromatography and quantified by transmission densitometry.
We describe models of Mandarin prosody that allow us to make quantitative measurements of prosodic strengths. These models use Stem-ML, which is a phenomenological model of the muscle dynamics and planning process that controls the tension of the vocal folds, and therefore the pitch of speech. Because Stem-ML describes the interactions between nearby tones, we were able to capture surface tonal...
Measuring accuracy of a face detection algorithm hardly ever mentioned in detail and explicitly. The standard and terminology used in each experiment reported in each paper were vary and not standardized. In this paper, a method for calculating detection accuracy empirically is proposed. It consists of two algorithms that can be used for measuring accuracy of single face image and multiple face...
This paper describes works at the Centre for Strategic Manufacturing, University of Strathclyde on developing Quantitative Models for Performance Measurement Systems (QMPMS) using cognitive maps, cause and e!ect diagrams, tree diagrams, and the analytic hierarchy process. It describes how the technique can be used to identify factors a!ecting performance and their relationships, structure them ...
T paper introduces a method to measure regret theory, a popular theory of decision under uncertainty. Regret theory allows for violations of transitivity, and it may seem paradoxical to quantitatively measure an intransitive theory. We adopt the trade-off method and show that it is robust to violations of transitivity. Our method makes no assumptions about the shape of the functions reflecting ...
A low-gravity environment, in space or in ground-based facilities such as drop towers, provides a unique setting for studying combustion mechanisms. Understanding the physical phenomena controlling the ignition and spread of flames in microgravity has importance for space safety as well as for better characterization of dynamical and chemical combustion processes which are normally masked by bu...
A new bioelectronic system for detecting and measuring voice parameters (TONAR) was used to quantify nasality in 50 educable mentally retarded children. Results indicated that over one-third of the children evaluated were hypemasal. The high prevalence of excessive nasality in EMR children was contrasted with (1) normative data on 78 nonretarded children collected with the bioelectronic system ...
Ultrasonic imaging of " flesh and blood " is vulnerable to the natural variability of these media: the speed of sound is not known, not constant, and not amenable to calibration using simply shaped manufactured samples. When images of high dimensional accuracy are needed, as for image-guided surgery, the " average " or " typical " values used in diagnostic ultrasound may not be good enough. In ...
The tendency for protease ligands to bind in an extended conformation has been suggested as an important factor for the identification of compounds of medicinal importance. Here we present a novel graph-theoretical method giving a quantitative measure of ligand conformation, and through application of this method to a representative set of protease ligands in bound and unbound conformations, de...
