We consider quantum effects of an electromagnetic field in a radiation–dominated almost FRW spacetime. The dominant non–local quantum correction to the photon distribution is a quadrupole moment, corresponding to an effective anisotropic pressure in the energy–momentum tensor.

In terms of spin coherent states we have investigated topological defects in 2D S = 1 (pseudo)spin quantum system with the bilinear and biquadratic isotropic exchange in the continuum limit. The proper Hamiltonian of the model can be written as bilinear on the generators of SU(3) group (Gell-Mann matrices). Knowledge of such group structure enables us to obtain some new exact analytical results...

Nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) is the study of the energy splittings due to interaction of the electric quadrupole moment of the nucleus with the electric field gradient that exists at the nuclear site. Many nuclei with spins greater than Vz have a quadrupole moment and most of these quadrupole moments have been measured and tabulated. Thus, the information gained by studying NQR is the mag...

We report Monte Carlo simulations of solvation of a point dipole in dipolar–quadrupolar solvents of varying dipole moment and axial quadrupole. The simulations are carried out to test the prediction of dielectric solvation models of a monotonic increase of the absolute value of the solvation chemical potential umpu with the solvent dielectric constant e . Dielectric constants are obtained from ...

A resonance phenomenon which is closely related to NMR is nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), which was discovered in 1950 by Dehmelt and Kruger. All nuclei with a spin > 1 possess in addition to the magnetic moment, an electric quadrupole moment eQ, which measures the deviation of the distribution of the positive charge in the nucleus from spherical symmetry. While e is the elementary charge, ...

The electric-quadrupole moment of the (199)Hg+ 5d9 6s2 (2)D(5/2) state is measured to be theta(D,5/2) = -2.29(8) x 10(-40) C m2. This value was determined by measuring the frequency of the (199)Hg+ 5d10 6s (2)S(1/2) --> 5d9 6s2 (2)D(5/2) optical clock transition for different applied electric-field gradients. An isolated, mechanically stable optical cavity provides a frequency reference for the...
