Paravalvular leak (PVL) is a seldomly covered aspect of structural heart disease. However, this is a condition that frequently presents after valvular replacement. This article will cover the diagnosising and treating PVL (i.e. imaging, access, and device selection). In addition, specific aspects of aortic and mitral PVL closure will be covered in this review.
Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) has been linked to invasive community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections. However, the association between disease and PVL-positive methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) has not been widely reported. We aimed to examine the epidemiology of PVL in clinical MSSA isolates from patients presenting to Auckland City Hospita...
To the Editor: The pathogenicity of Staphylococcus aureus depends on various bacterial surface components and extracellular proteins. However, the precise role of single virulence determinants in relation to infection is hard to establish. The frequent recovery of staphylococcal isolates that produce leukocidal toxins from patients with deep skin and soft tissue infections, particularly furuncu...
The aim of this study was to analyze proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) for the possible presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). We studied three groups: Sub-Group 1 was composed of 10 patients with PVL, (6 of whom had developed OSCC); Sub-Group 2 comprised 5 patients with OSCC but no preceding PVL; and Sub-Group 3 were 5 controls with clinically nor...
We examined the capacity of Staphylococcus aureus strains to release Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) in the presence of antibiotics. No PVL was detected when S. aureus was incubated at inhibitory concentrations, while subinhibitory concentrations of oxacillin enhanced the PVL level; clindamycin, linezolid, and fusidic acid were inhibitory; and vancomycin had roughly no effect.
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Portal vein ligation (PVL) has been used clinically to decrease the amount of liver before surgical resection, consequently, minimizing postoperative dysfunction in the remaining hypertrophied liver lobes. To date, few reports in the literature have demonstrated the regenerative capacity of unaffected lobes following PVL plus hepatic artery ligation (HAL). This study was cond...
OBJECTIVES To examine the effect of subinhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) of antistaphylococcal drugs on Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL), α-haemolysin (Hla) and protein A (SpA) expression by community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA). METHODS Five clinical isolates representing the main worldwide CA-MRSA clones were grown with sub-MICs (1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 MIC) ...
BACKGROUND Significant prosthetic paravalvular leakage (PVL) could have serious clinical consequences and impairs survival. Reoperation is associated with a high mortality rate, and transcatheter closure is a new treatment modality for high-risk patients. The goal of this study was to determine safety and midterm clinical efficacy of transcatheter PVL closure using an open transapical approach....
Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) represents a rare but highly aggressive form of oral leukoplakia with >70% progressing to malignancy. Yet, PVL remains biologically and genetically poorly understood. This study evaluated the cell cycle regulatory genes, p16 and p14 , for homozygous deletion, loss of heterozygosity, and mutation events in 20 PVL cases. Deletion of exon 1B, 1A, or 2 was ...
