Catalase activity was measured in resting-cell suspensions of psychrophilic bacteria grown at 2 and at 30 C. Enzyme activity decreased in both cell-suspension types as harvest age increased. At comparable physiological age, cells grown at 2 C had more catalase than cells grown at 30 C.
Cypermethrin is a potential toxic pollutant that directly threatens the aquatic ecosystems and environment. Propolis, a natural product collected from plants by honey bees has many functions, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory. This study attempted to detrmine some biochemical and microbiological parameters of rainbow trout fillets after exposure to propolis and cypermet...
A new psychrophilic marine protease was found from a marine bacterium Flavobacterium YS-80 in the Chinese Yellow Sea. The protease is about 49 kD with an isoelectric point about 4.5. It consists of 480 amino acids and is homologous to a psychrophilic alkaline protease (PAP) from an Antarctic Pseudomonas species. The protein was purified from the natural bacterium fermented and crystallized. Its...
BACKGROUND The production of microbial lipids has attracted considerable interest during the past decade since they can be successfully used to produce biodiesel by catalyzed transesterification with short chain alcohols. Certain yeast species, including several psychrophilic isolates, are oleaginous and accumulate lipids from 20 to 70% of biomass under appropriate cultivation conditions. Among...
Sclerotinia borealis is a necrotrophic phytopathogenic fungus notable for its wide host range and environmental persistence. It grows at low temperatures, causing snow mold disease of crop plants. To understand the molecular mechanisms of its pathogenesis and adaptation to the psychrophilic lifestyle, we determined the 39.3-Mb draft genome sequence of S. borealis F-4128.
Acetobacterium bakii DSM 8239 is an anaerobic, psychrophilic, and chemolithoautotrophic bacterium that is a potential platform for producing commodity chemicals from syngas fermentation. We report here the draft genome sequence of A. bakii DSM 8239 (4.14 Mb) to elucidate its physiological and metabolic properties related to syngas fermentation.
Evolutionary relationships of cultivated barophilic bacteria were determined. All psychrophilic and barophilic isolates were affiliated with one of five genera of the gamma subdivision of the class Proteobacteria ((gamma)-Proteobacteria): Shewanella, Photobacterium, Colwellia, Moritella, and a new group containing strain CNPT3. The data indicate that the barophilic phenotype has evolved indepen...
We report the 4.5-Mbp genome sequences of Sphingobacterium antarcticum 4BY, a psychrophilic bacterium isolated from the soils of Schirmacher Oasis, Antarctica. The draft genome of S. antarcticum strain 4BY consists of 4,566,318 bp with 40.4% G+C content, 4,234 protein coding genes, and 52 RNAs.
The psychrophilic bacterium Pseudomonas syringae strain Lz4W was isolated from soil samples from Antarctica to decipher the mechanisms of low-temperature adaptation. We report here the 4.982-Mb draft genome sequence of P. syringae Lz4W. This sequence will provide insights into the genomic basis of the psychrophilicity of this bacterium.
