The restoration and recovery of a defective skull can be performed through operative techniques to implant a customized prosthesis. Recently, image processing and surface reconstruction methods have been used for digital prosthesis design. In this paper we present a framework for prosthesis modeling. Firstly, we take the computed tomography (CT) of the skull and perform bone segmentation by thr...

We aimed to find out whether the Hastings bipolar prosthesis moved in a bipolar fashion after its use for displaced fractures of the femoral neck. In 65 patients non-weight-bearing movement was assessed radiographically and compared with an earlier study of the Monk prosthesis. In 70% of patients, the only movement was between the acetabulum and the prosthetic shell, the prosthesis behaving as ...

The design of high-resolution retinal prostheses presents many unique engineering and biological challenges. Ever smaller electrodes must inject enough charge to stimulate nerve cells, within electrochemically safe voltage limits. Stimulation sites should be placed within an electrode diameter from the target cells to prevent 'blurring' and minimize current. Signals must be delivered wirelessly...

INTRODUCTION Throughout history, many attempts to cure complete impotence have been recorded. Early attempts at a surgical approach involved the placement of rigid devices to support the natural process of erection formation. However, these early attempts placed the devices outside of the corpora cavernosa, with high rates of erosion and infection. Today, most urologists in the United States no...

BACKGROUND The application of a maxillofacial prosthesis is an alternative to surgery in functional-aesthetic facial reconstruction. Computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing has opened up a new approach to the fabrication of maxillofacial prostheses. An intelligentized rapid simulative design and manufacturing system for prostheses was developed to facilitate the prosthesis fabricatio...

Because of several failures by dissociation of a redesigned bipolar prosthesis, a new, dynamic test was developed. This dynamic cam-out test represents a closer simulation of one possible clinical mechanism of bipolar disassociation. The results of dynamic testing are affected by the bipolar design, particularly the locking mechanism that was the problem with the redesigned prosthesis.

Gagging is most common protective reflex that prevents the foreign bodies from entering trachea. But some patients have abnormally active gag reflex. The purpose of this paper was to describe method of managing gagging patients , based on modified treatment approaches, starting from impression making to design of the prosthesis i.e. palateless denture, to help the patient tolerate prosthesis in...

We quantify how the hip energetics and knee torque required for an above-knee prosthesis user to walk with the kinematics of able-bodied humans vary with the inertial properties of the prosthesis. We also select and optimize passive mechanical components for a prosthetic knee to accurately reproduce the required knee torque. Previous theoretical studies have typically investigated the effects o...
