BACKGROUND The relationship between chronic prostatitis and fertility has been controversial for many years. We have previously shown the presence of a cellular autoimmune response against prostate antigens in a group of chronic prostatitis patients. Our main goal was to investigate whether chronic prostatitis (either caused by an infection or an autoimmune response to the prostate gland) could...

To the Editor: Leptospirosis, an important zoonosis in most warm-climate areas, is endemic in most Caribbean countries (1). The disease was first reported in Barbados 60 years ago (2), and since 1979 has been the subject of continual study as the result of the establishment of the Lepto-spira Laboratory by the governments of Barbados and the United Kingdom. Granulomatous prostatitis is a rare benign inflammatory condition of prostate. It is mistaken for prostatic carcinoma. Clinically it presents as hard nodule on digital rectal examination with raised serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels and reduced free PSA levels. We report a rare case of non-specific granulomatous prostatitis clinically diagnosed as carcinoma prostate.

We present a case of acute prostatitis with abscess. The patient had undergone intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy for bladder cancer. A prostate biopsy demonstrated tuberculous prostatitis with abscess. This case illustrates that when bladder cancer is treated with BCG, a tuberculous prostate abscess can develop.

Prostatitis is a common disease contributing to 8% of all urologist visits. Yet the etiology and effective treatment remain to be further elucidated. Using a non-obese diabetes mouse model that can be induced by autoimmune response for the spontaneous development of prostatitis, we found that injection of the ASC-J9® at 75 mg/Kg body weight/48 hours led to significantly suppressed prostatitis t...

The etiology of chronic prostatitis syndromes in men is controversial, particularly when positive cultures for established uropathogens are lacking. Although identification of bacteria in prostatic fluid has relied on cultivation and microscopy, most microorganisms in the environment, including some human pathogens, are resistant to cultivation. We report here on an rRNA-based molecular phyloge...
