An olfactory stimulus and a visual stimulus were employed in a context-dependent memory study using a prose passage as the to-be-remembered item. Ninety-five university students (aged 17-35 years) learned the passage of prose in the presence of one of the stimuli and were then asked to recall the passage with the original context either reinstated or not reinstated. The results revealed a signi...

This study compared eye movements during the reading of authentic prose and poetry with and without enjambment presented in their original layout and in a manipulated layout. We hypothesised that we would find differences in reading patterns on the basis of the layout in which the text was presented. This effect is called boundary extension (BE; e.g., Intraub & Richardson, 1989). Previous studies have observed BE in memory for visual and haptic stimuli, and the present experiments examined whether BE occurred in memory fo...

We investigate the maximal length of repeat as a function of the text length in ten English texts. The maximal length of repeat in the experimental data is greater than a power of the logarithm of the text length where the exponent is close to 2. This result indicates that English prose cannot be modeled by a finite-energy stochastic process, differently than we have previously assumed.

It is particularly interesting to locate patterns that are either invariant across time or exhibit a characteristic change across time, as they could imply something important about society that those works record.
