Erosion by glacial and fluvial processes shapes mountain landscapes in a long-recognized and characteristic way. Upland valleys incised by fluvial processes typically have a V-shaped cross-section with uniform and moderately steep slopes, whereas glacial valleys tend to have a U-shaped profile with a changing slope gradient. We present a novel regional approach to automatically differentiate be...

Stationary states of an electron in thin GaAs elliptical quantum rings are calculated within the effective-mass approximation. The width of the ring varies smoothly along the centerline, which is an ellipse. The solutions of the Schrödinger equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions are approximated by a product of longitudinal and transversal wave functions. The ground-state probability densi...

Active systems on curved geometries are ubiquitous in the living world. In the presence of curvature, orientationally ordered polar flocks are forced to be inhomogeneous, often requiring the presence of topological defects even in the steady state because of the constraints imposed by the topology of the underlying surface. In the presence of spontaneous flow, the system additionally supports l...

nowadays, water supply for sustainable development is one of the most important concerns and challenges in most countries of the world. due to determination of groundwater potential zones are one of the important tools in the conservation, management and utilization of water resources. thus, the present study aimed to prioritize the effective factors on groundwater potential and its susceptibil...

The representation of shape in the responses of monkey cutaneous mechanoreceptive afferents to steps of varying shape vertically indented into the fingerpad was studied. A series of flat plates was used, each with a step change in thickness in the middle so that one-half of the plate was thicker than the other. The cross-sectional shape of the step approximated that of a half-cycle sinusoid, 0....

Isolated responses were recorded from fibers in the median nerves of human subjects by using microneurography. Mechanoreceptive afferent fibers with receptive fields on the fingerpads were selected. The fingers were immobilized and spherical stimuli were applied passively to the receptive field with a contact force of 40-, 60-, or 80-g weight. The radii of the spheres were 1.92, 2.94, 5.81, or ...

In this work, we discuss an optical method for measuring surface tension induced menisci. The principle of measurement is based upon the change in the background pattern produced by the curvature of the meniscus acting as a lens. We measure the meniscus profile over an inclined glass plate and utilize the measured meniscus for estimation of surface tension and refractive index.

Gu and Zhu [16] have shown that Type-II Ricci flow singularities develop from nongeneric rotationally symmetric Riemannian metrics on Sn+1 (n ≥ 2). In this paper, we describe and provide plausibility arguments for a detailed asymptotic profile and rate of curvature blow-up that we predict such solutions exhibit.

The formation dynamics is studied for a singular profile of a surface of an ideal conducting fluid in an electric field. Self-similar solutions of electrohydrodynamic equations describing the fundamental process of formation of surface conic cusps with angles close to the Taylor cone angle 98.6 are obtained. The behavior of physical quantities (field strength, fluid velocity, surface curvature)...
