Anaplastic lymphoma kinase-positive large B-cell lymphoma (ALK(+) LBCL) represents a distinct subtype of mature B-cell neoplasms in the most recent WHO classification of hematolymphoid neoplasms. It has a characteristic immunoblastic/plasmablastic morphology, a distinct immunophenotypic profile and recurrent cytogenetic/molecular genetic abnormalities, and has been reported in both the adult an...

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a very aggressive variant of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma initially described in the oral cavity of HIV-infected individuals. PBL represents a diagnostic challenge given its characteristic morphology and lack of CD20 expression, and also a therapeutic challenge, with early responses to therapy, but with high relapse rates and poor prognosis. In recent years, our...

Plasmablastic myeloma (PBM) is a rare, monoclonal, immunoproliferative plasma cell neoplasm that shares many characteristics with plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) [1]. Currently, there are no set standards for differentiating between PBL and PBM. Morphologically, PBM is characterized by the presence of large plasma cells with large hyperchromatic nuclei, one or more prominent centrally-located nucl...

Extramedullary plasmacytomas, Epstein-Bar virus (EBV) associated, are rarely encountered and usually have a fairly good clinical outcome. EBV+ plasmacytoma may cause a diagnostic dilemma as it phenotypically resembles an aggressive plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL). Herein, we report a unique case with maxillary EBV+ plasmacytoma from a 76-year-old immunocompetent individual.

Pyrexia of unknown origin has always been a challenging problem to diagnose for physicians. Here we present a case of a splenic tumor, which after histopathology and immunohistochemistry, two possibilities were considered, a diffuse large cell lymphoma--plasmablastic variant and second an anaplastic plasmacytoma. The patient was treated with chemotherapy and on followup he has no evidence of re...
