Drought causes a decrease in tobacco yield and quality as well reduction net photosynthetic rate. Salicylic acid (SA) is involved the regulation of many physiological processes has been widely used to improve plant drought tolerance. The hydroponic experiment was carried out on flue-cured variety K326. SA solutions (0.3 mM) were sprayed leaves every day for three days, after which 15% PEG-6000 ...

Knowledge of which genes and pathways are affected by inbreeding may help understanding the genetic basis of inbreeding depression, the potential for purging (selection against deleterious recessive alleles), and the transition from outcrossing to selfing. Arabidopsis lyrata is a predominantly self-incompatible perennial plant, closely related to the selfing model species A. thaliana. To examin...

Abstract Maize ( Zea mays L.) is highly sensitive to drought stress, resulting in large losses yield; therefore, strategies aimed at enhancing tolerance are essential. Melatonin improves stress plants; however, its mechanism maize seedlings under remains unknown. Therefore, we investigated the effects of foliar-sprayed melatonin (100 umol L −1 ) on antioxidant system, photosynthetic gas exchang...

The organelle genomes of the Antarctic alga Prasiola crispa (Lightfoot) Kützing have been sequenced. The plastid and mitochondrial genomes have a total length of 196,502 bp and 89,819 bp, respectively. These genomes have 19 putative photosynthesis-related genes and 17 oxidative metabolism-related genes, respectively.

Plant mitochondria have multiple energy-dissipating components in the respiratory chain. It is known that these components are induced under several stress conditions. Here we examined whether the gene expression pattern and its regulatory mechanism under high light (HL) conditions are different among the respiratory components in Arabidopsis leaves. Alternative oxidase (AOX) gene expression (A...

We report the first genome sequence from the recently established alpha-4 proteobacterial genus Sandarakinorhabdus. The genome of the Sandarakinorhabdus sp. strain AAP62 contains a photosynthesis gene cluster carrying major genes for bacterial reaction centers. The presence of genes related to aerobic respiratory electron transport confirms the lifestyle of this organism as an aerobic anoxygeni...

Developing chloroplasts are able to communicate their status to the nucleus and regulate expression of genes whose products are needed for photosynthesis. Heme is revealed to be a signaling molecule for this retrograde communication.
