The expression of a gene encoding an embryonic chick pepsinogen was investigated in developing avian gut. Expression is restricted to the epithelial layer of the embryonic proventriculus (glandular stomach). We can therefore regard this gene as a marker gene for proventricular epithelial differentiation. There is some considerable evidence in favour of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions being ...

The spontaneous and pepsin-catalyzed activation of pepsinogen has been observed and analyzed kinetically. At appropriate protein concentrations (1 mg per ml or less), a kinetically first order reaction was observed in the pH range 1 to 3, implying an intramolecular activation mechanism. Substantiation of the first order reaction came from a linear plot of log pepsinogen concentration versus tim...

Gastric cancer is a heterogeneous disorder; genetic factors, H. pylori infection and various environmental factors contribute to its development. Advanced atrophic corpus-predominant gastritis provides the histological base for its genesis. Low socio-economic status and poor hygienic conditions, smoking habits, heavy alcohol consumption, high salt and low intake of vegetables and fruits are imp...

BACKGROUND/AIMS Synchronous/metachronous gastric epithelial neoplasias (GENs) in the remaining lesion can develop at sites other than the site of endoscopic resection. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the predictive value of serum pepsinogen for detecting multiple GENs in patients who underwent endoscopic resection. METHODS In total, 228 patients with GEN who underwent endoscopic...

The relation between Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection and fasting gastrin and pepsinogen-I and -II concentrations was evaluated in 278 volunteers without symptoms and the results were compared with the values obtained in 35 patients with duodenal ulcers. H pylori infection was determined with the 13C-urea breath test in subjects without symptoms and with endoscopy, biopsy (histology and...

By incubation of pepsinogen with pepstatin at pH2.5, the first 'active' protein generated on activation is trapped in an inactive complex. The first activation peptide liberated has been identified as residues 1-16 from the pepsinogen sequence. This suggests a sequential mechanism rather than a one-step formation of pepsin.

Activation of swine pepsinogen with chicken pepsin results in the formation of swine pepsin. Activation of chicken pepsinogen with swine pepsin results in the formation of chicken pepsin. The structure responsible for the species specificity of the enzyme is therefore present in the inactive precursor.

This study was aimed to investigate the association of restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) for pepsinogen genes with peptic ulcer disease. Eighty unrelated controls, 61 patients with gastric ulcer, and 57 patients with duodenal ulcer were studied. No genetic polymorphisms for pepsinogen A were detected by EcoRI digestion in Japanese subjects but a 100 base pairs insertion-deletion...
