Background: Renal failure is a complication of severe malaria, and rhabdomyolysis with myoglobinuria is an uncommon cause. We report an unusual case of severe falciparum malaria with dengue coinfection complicated by acute renal failure and myoglobinemia, myoglobinuria but a normal creatine kinase (CK).
Association of symmetric peripheral gangrene (SPG) with falciparum malaria infection is a relatively uncommon clinical entity. Here we report a case of complicated falciparum malaria with SPG involving both lower limbs from the mid-calf downwards, probably due to antibody mediated vasculitis.
We report two cases of Plasmodium vivax malaria (both aged 12 years) complicated by seizures and symptoms of diffuse meningoencephalitis. One had predominantly meningeal signs while in the other, purely encephalitis features were present. Both cases were treated with artesunate. Rarely, cerebral malaria is a presenting complication or occurs during the course of P. vivax infection.
Abstract This case report describes the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of a 34-year-old male patient with malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, complicated immune hemolytic anemia. The initially presented one-day history fever feeling unwell, but diagnosis was missed. Four days later, during second follow-up visit, administered Artemisinin Piperaquine tablets. Despite this ...
BACKGROUND Artemisinin derivatives may have advantages over quinoline drugs for treating severe malaria since they are fast acting and effective against quinine resistant malaria parasites. OBJECTIVES The objective of this review was to assess the effects of artemisinin drugs for severe and complicated falciparum malaria in adults and children. SEARCH STRATEGY We searched the Cochrane Infec...
to 500 million febrile illnesses and several million deaths annually1–2. Malaria is endemic in India and continues to account for almost a 1000 deaths per year since 2002. Almost all of the mortality is accountable to Plasmodium falciparum infection3. Vivax malaria is generally thought as the “benign tertian malaria” and is unaccompanied by any adverse complications. Recently few complicated ca...
To determine if quinine has a metabolic effect during treatment of severe or complicated malaria, we studied its effects on plasma glucose and plasma insulin levels in 150 pregnant women with malaria referred to Madani maternity teaching hospital, Gezira state and 50 healthy pregnant controls. Levels were determined at baseline (day 0) before the start of quinine treatment, after 2 days of trea...
BACKGROUND Severe cholestatic jaundice may complicate with bile cast nephropathy (BCN) causing severe acute kidney injury (AKI). In this study, we investigate BCN in severe falciparum malaria complicated with jaundice and AKI. METHODS This prospective study was conducted in a tertiary health care institution with high prevalence of malaria. A cohort of 110 patients with falciparum malaria com...
We report a patient with diabetes mellitus who suffered severe falciparum malaria complicated by profound and persistent hypoglycaemia. The hypoglycaemia evolved before therapy with quinine was begun and resolved with eradication of the parasitaemia. The patient reverted to her baseline hyperglycaemia despite continuation of quinine. This case illustrates the critical role of falciparum malaria...
Despite recent advancements in diagnostic and treatment modalities, malaria is still one of the most prevalent human diseases with high mortality and morbidity. We described a case of 45 years old man with Plasmodium falciparum malaria primarily presenting with myocarditis. The possibility of malaria was Subsequently considered when he developed fever followed by signs of cerebral involvement. ...
