TbMnO3 is an orthorhombic insulator where incommensurate spin order for temperature T(N)<41 K is accompanied by ferroelectric order for T<28 K. To understand this, we establish the magnetic structure above and below the ferroelectric transition using neutron diffraction. In the paraelectric phase, the spin structure is incommensurate and longitudinally modulated. In the ferroelectric phase, how...
The perovskite Li0.2Na0.8NbO3 is shown, by powder neutron diffraction, to display a unique sequence of phase transitions at elevated temperature. The ambient temperature polar phase (rhombohedral, space group R3c) transforms via a first-order transition to a polar tetragonal phase (space group P42mc) in the region 150-300°C; these two phases correspond to Glazer tilt systems a-a-a- and a+a+c-, ...
Quantum spins placed on the corners of a square lattice can dimerize and form singlets, which then can be transformed into a magnetic state as the interactions between dimers increase beyond threshold. This is a strictly 2D transition in theory, but real-world materials often need the third dimension to stabilize long-range order. We use high pressures to convert sheets of Cu(2+) spin 1/2 dimer...
Interstitials and vacancies in the Abrikosov phase of clean Type II superconductors are line imperfections, which cannot extend across macroscopic equilibrated samples at low temperatures. We argue that the entropy associated with line wandering nevertheless can cause these defects to proliferate at a sharp transition which will exist if this occurs below the temperature at which the crystal ac...
The theory of magnetic symmetry in quasicrystals is used to characterize the nature of magnetic peaks, expected in elastic neutron diffraction experiments. It is established that there is no symmetry-based argument which forbids the existence of quasiperiodic long-range magnetic order. Suggestions are offered as to where one should look for the simplest kinds of antiferromagnetic quasicrystals.
The energy resolution associated with a particular Bragg reflection is limited by the diffraction properties and by the quality of the material. It can be derived from the structure factor within the dynamic theory of diffraction for ideal crystals. Using the GaAs [200] reflection on a neutron backscattering spectrometer we could realize a resolution of AE=(43±5) neV. This is an improvement by ...
Pressure effects on the stability of magnetic phases in La(1.4)Sr(1.6)Mn(2)O(7) have been studied using magnetization measurements and neutron diffraction. At ambient conditions this material is a quasi-two-dimensional ferromagnet. On cooling it becomes ordered three dimensionally: at 90 K La(1.4)Sr(1.6)Mn(2)O(7) it becomes an antiferromagnet, and at 65 K it undergoes a transition into a ferrom...
First principles calculations on the hybrid perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 predict strong hydrogen-bonding which influences the structure and dynamics of the methylammonium cation and reveal its interaction with the tilting of the PbI6 octahedra. The calculated atomic coordinates are in excellent agreement with neutron diffraction results.
We report muon spin relaxation (μSR) measurements on two Ti(3+) containing perovskites, LaTiO(3) and YTiO(3), which display long-range magnetic order at low temperature. For both materials, oscillations in the time dependence of the muon polarization are observed which are consistent with three-dimensional magnetic order. From our data we identify two magnetically inequivalent muon stopping sit...
