We document the absence of carriage of Neisseria meningitidis W-135 of the sequence type 11 in returning pilgrims after the Hajj 2002. This finding contrasts with the 15% carriage rate we previously reported in pilgrims returning from the Hajj 2001. The epidemiology of carriage may be changing or may have been controlled by vaccination and a policy of administering antibiotics to pilgrims from ...

GNA1946 (Genome-derived Neisseria Antigen 1946) is a highly conserved exposed outer membrane lipoprotein from Neisseria meningitidis bacteria of 287 amino acid length (31 kDa). Although the structure of NMB1946 has been solved recently by X-Ray crystallography, understanding the behaviour of GNA1946 in aqueuos solution is highly relevant for the discovery of the antigenic determinants of the pr...

GNA2132 (Genome-derived Neisseria Antigen 2132) is a surface-exposed lipoprotein discovered by reverse vaccinology and expressed by genetically diverse Neisseria meningitidis strains (Pizza et al. 2000). The protein induces bactericidal antibodies against most strains of Meningococccus and has been included in a multivalent recombinant vaccine against N. meningitidis serogroup B. Structure dete...

Serum agar sugars are variable in performance when used to identify the pathogenic Neisseria. In these circumstances, it has been common practice to rely on the Gram strain and oxidase reaction to confirm the clinical diagnosis. However, with reports of isolations of Neisseria gonorrhoea from nonurogenital sites and isolations of Neisseria meningitidis from cases of neonatal ophthalmia (Barr an...

The influence of 0.05% sodium polyanethol sulfonate on the growth of 24 strains of Neisseria meningitidis in broth medium was examined; several of the strains were markedly inhibited. A paper disk method was evolved for screening the sensitivity of various bacteria to sodium polyanethol sulfonate on solid medium; the highest sensitivity was observed in N. meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae....

We have investigated genetic differences between the closely related pathogenic Neisseria species, Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, as a novel approach to the elucidation of the genetic basis for their different pathogenicities. N. meningitidis is a major cause of cerebrospinal meningitis, whereas N. gonorrhoeae is the agent of gonorrhoea. The technique of representational diff...

To compensate for the lack of laboratories in remote areas, the national reference laboratory for meningitis in Niger used polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to enhance the surveillance of meningitis caused by Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae. PCR effectively documented the wide geographic spread of N. meningitidis serogroup W135.

We developed a new Neisseria meningitidis multiplex PCR to determine six serogroups, including X-specific primers, and to allow direct W135/Y discrimination. This assay offers a simple and low-cost method for serogrouping N. meningitidis from cerebrospinal fluid that could be useful in Africa.

In 2012, Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W caused a widespread meningitis epidemic in Burkina Faso. We describe the dynamic of the epidemic at the subdistrict level. Disease detection at this scale allows for a timelier response, which is critical in the new epidemiologic landscape created in Africa by the N. meningitidis A conjugate vaccine.

Among 384 patients with confirmed meningococcal disease, the likelihood of detecting Neisseria meningitidis DNA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) increased with age, serogroup B infection, and prehospitalization antibiotic treatment. Plasma and CSF genomic bacterial loads of non-B N. meningitidis serogroups correlated significantly. Serogroup B-infected patients with genotype TNF2 (-308A) had signif...
