Smooth muscle relaxation in vertebrates is regulated by a variety of neuronal signalling molecules, including neuropeptides and nitric oxide (NO). The physiology of muscle relaxation in echinoderms is of particular interest because these animals are evolutionarily more closely related to the vertebrates than to the majority of invertebrate phyla. However, whilst in vertebrates there is a clear ...

Several studies from our laboratory show that axial stretch of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) in an oral direction causes neurally mediated LES relaxation. Under physiological conditions, axial stretch of the LES is caused by longitudinal muscle contraction (LMC) of the esophagus. Because longitudinal muscle is composed of skeletal muscle in mice, vagal-induced LMC and LES relaxation are ...

Background: It is well known that erectile dysfunction is most commonly associated with diabetes, affecting 35% to 75% of men with diabetes mellitus. Several studies have been carried out to find appropriate strategies for treatment of diabetes-induced erectile dysfunction. The aim of the present study was to investigate the ability of acute administration of the endogenous cannabinoid anandami...

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of progressive muscle relaxation interventions in reducing pain levels postoperative patients. The research method used is scoping review. results showed that intervention reduced patients' levels. In conclusion, advanced as non-pharmacological therapy effectively reduce levels.

AIM To investigate the acute effects of stochastic resonance whole body vibration (SR-WBV), including muscle relaxation and cardiovascular activation. METHODS Sixty-four healthy students participated. The participants were randomly assigned to sham SR-WBV training at a low intensity (1.5 Hz) or a verum SR-WBV training at a higher intensity (5 Hz). Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic bloo...

This study was designed to elucidate high-K(+)induced response of circular and longitudinal smooth muscle from human gastric corpus using isometric contraction. Contraction from circular and longitudinal muscle stripes of gastric corpus greater curvature and lesser curvature were compared. Circular smooth muscle from corpus greater curvature showed high K(+) (50 mM)-induced tonic contraction. O...

In nine patients with chronic compartment syndrome, the intramuscular pressure and muscle blood flow during constant dynamic exercise was studied by the microcapillary infusion method and by the 133-xenon clearance technique. Although muscle blood flow was normal at the start of exercise, pain and impaired muscle function eventually developed; muscle blood flow decreased while muscle relaxation...

PURPOSE To understand the cellular mechanism underlying the relaxation of ciliary muscle, relaxation induced by prostaglandins (PGs) and some other agents was characterized in the cat. METHODS Tone of isolated ciliary muscle was measured by means of a force-displacement transducer. Adenylate cyclase activity was determined with membrane fraction of ciliary muscle by measuring the formation of...

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of the metabolites H+, ADP, and Pi on the rate of cardiac relaxation. We used guinea pig right ventricular trabeculae that had been chemically skinned, allowing the myofilaments to be studied in isolation. Laser-flash photolysis of the caged Ca2+ chelator diazo 2, causing a rapid fall in intracellular Ca2+, enabled investigation of relaxation inde...

Pain is one of the most frequent symptoms observed in patients and various treatments are proposed for its relief, including relaxation techniques. With the purpose of testing the effect of a specific intervention (progressive muscle relaxation) in a determined situation (pain), this study aimed at verifying the level of pain in post-surgery patients prior to and after the application of the Pr...
