Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has been used to simulate laser fusion of ceramic precursors to prepare BSCCO high temperature superconducting materials. At fast heating rates, typical of the laser floating zone, the energy required for complete melting of the precursor increases with the Bi to Sr+Ca ratio, in agreement with the critical current results obtained. At low heating rates, s...

Detailed measurements of aerodynamic heating rates in the wake of a Mars-Pathfinder configuration model have been made. Heating data were obtained in a conventional wind tunnel, the NASA LaRC 31" Mach 10 Air Tunnel, and in a high-enthalpy impulse facility, the NASA HYPULSE expansion tube, in which air and CO2 were employed as test gases. The enthalpy levels were 0.7 MJ/kg in the Mach 10 Tunnel,...

A slow pyrolysis of pinewood was investigated in this paper. Through the briquette process, the pinewood sawdust becomes molded biomass. The molded bio-char was produced from molded biomass with different pyrolysis factors, and the bio-char’s heating value, char yield rates, and physicochemical and morphological properties were investigated. Molded bio-char’s characteristics depended principall...

The creation of low resistivity, ultrashallow source/drain regions in MOS device structures requires rapid thermal processing (RTP) techniques that restrict diffusion and activate a significant percentage of the implanted dopant species. While current heating techniques depend upon illumination based heating, a new technology, electromagnetic induction heating (EMIH), achieves a rapid heating o...

We measure feedback (heating rates) in damped Lyα systems (DLAs) from the cooling rate of the neutral gas. Since cooling occurs through [C II] 158 μm emission, we infer cooling from C II 1335.7 absorption lines detected with HIRES on the Keck I telescope. The inferred heating rates are 30 times lower than for the Galaxy ISM. At z ≈ 2.8 the implied star formation rate per unit area is logψ∗=−2.4...
