Vertical junction resonant microdisk modulators and switches have been demonstrated with exceptionally low power consumption, low-voltage operation, high-speed, and compact size. This paper reviews the progress of vertical junction microdisk modulators, provides detailed design data, and compares vertical junction performance to lateral junction performance. The use of a vertical junction maxim...

We report room temperature electroluminescence of tensile-strained germanium microdisks. The strain is transferred into the microdisks using silicon nitride stressors. Carrier injection is achieved with Schottky contacts on n-type doped germanium. We show that a biaxial tensile-strain up to 0.72% can be transferred by optimizing the carrier injection profile. The transferred strain is measured ...

We discuss recent results in low-energy (0.9fJ/bit) high-speed (25Gb/s) electro-optically stabilized microdisk modulators. The combined results of highly efficient modulation and electro-optic thermal compensation represent a major step towards single-digit femtojoule-class communications. ©2014 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (130.3120) Integrated optics devices; (230.5750) Resonators; ...

We report single-mode lasing in subwavelength GaAs disks under optical pumping. The disks are fabricated by standard photolithography and two steps of wet chemical etching. The simple fabrication method can produce submicron disks with good circularity, smooth boundary, and vertical sidewalls. The smallest lasing disks have a diameter of 627 nm and thickness of 265 nm. The ratio of the disk dia...

A compact design based on high-Q microdisk resonators is proposed for low-power modulation where anti-symmetric operation of two phase shifters leads to significant insertion loss reduction. Operation analysis and design procedure are presented. OCIS codes: (130.3120) Integrated optics devices; (230.5750) Resonators; (130.4110) Modulators.

For the first time, we demonstrate data transmission over a radio frequency (RF) fiber-optic link using a LiNbO3 microdisk configured to modulate an optical carrier. Initial experimental results demonstrate high-quality data transmission up to 100 Mb/s on a 8.7 GHz RF carrier. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Integrated silica microdisk resonators can be used to create a variety of very high performance spectral filters. These filters can control the spectral emission of an erbium doped fiber laser. By modifying the number and sizes of the microdisks constituting these filters it is possible to produce single wavelength, periodic multi-frequency and non-periodic multi-wavelength fiber lasers. Channe...

We report a technique to fabricate whispering gallery mode microdisk resonators using femtosecond laser micromachining and a heat reflow process to improve the optical quality of the resonator. The fabricated resonators had suppressed higher order modes with a measured Q-factor as high as 7.2× 10. The described fabrication process, which relies on material non-thermal laser ablation, offers the...
