Activity-directed isolation of the methylene chloride fraction of the roots of Rubia cordifolia L. resulted in the identification of a new epoxymollugin (3) and eight known compounds (1, 2, 4-9). The structures of the compounds were elucidated from chemical and spectroscopic evidence. In addition, their topoisomerase I and II inhibitory activities and cytotoxicities were measured.

Fractionation of methylene chloride extracts of the resin of Ferula vesceritensis and F. sinaica afforded three sesquiterpene coumarins and a glucose derivative. One of them was a sesquiterpene with a rare carbon skeleton. The structures of these compounds were determined by extensive NMR studies, including DEPT, COSY, NOE, HMQC, and HMBC.

Six new cadinene sesquiterpenoids, xenitorins A-F (1-6), were isolated from the methylene chloride solubles of the Formosan soft coral Xenia puerto-galerae. The structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectral analysis, and their cytotoxicity against selected cancer cells was measured in vitro.

This procedure for determining serum proline in patients with hyperprolinemia involves protein precipitation (Folin-Wu method), color development with isatin, extraction of the color with methylene chloride and measurement of its absorbance at 600 nm. The specificity and analytical recovery show the method to be suitable for this use.

Petroleum ether and methylene chloride extracts of Peperomia galioides and three prenylated diphenols, grifolic acid, grifolin and piperogalin exhibited in vitro antileishmanial activity. During the course of infection of BALB/c mice with Leishmania amazonensis, the treatments with each of these compounds did not influence the progression of the disease.

Attempts to better understand causal factors affecting estrogenicity in municipal wastewater have primarily focused on analytical evaluation of specific chemical estrogens and the use of estrogen receptor (ER) based in vitro assays. To compare analytical,in vitro, and in vivo assays for estrogenicity, wastewater from four New York and one Texas municipal wastewater facilities was evaluated for ...

In our previous papers1»2), we described the structure-activity relationships of 6-(heterocyclyl)methylene penam sulfones (1) as a new class of /3-lactamase inhibitors and proposed a mechanism of enzyme inactivation for series 1. In continuation of these studies with series 1, we pursued the closely related structures in series 2, since they should follow a similar mechanistic pathway and shoul...
