Background: Infectious by Pseudomonas aeruginosa has spread worldwide and metallo-beta-lactamases (MBL) are being reported with increasing frequency. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibiotic susceptibility and distribution of blaVIM and blaIMP genes in P. aeruginosa isolates from Zanjan Province of Iran. Methods: A total of 70 P. aeruginosa isolates were identified from patients ...

Carbapenem resistance continues to erode the effectiveness of antibiotics such as imipenem and meropenem in the clinic. Resistance mechanisms can include interplay between porin loss (membrane permeability), mutation of penicillin binding proteins necessary for cell division, and expression of class A, B and D β-lactamases. Bacterial resistance to β-lactams such as penicillin or amoxicillin has...

A novel metallo-β-lactamase, NDM-8, was identified in a multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli isolate, IOMTU11 (NCGM37), obtained from the respiratory tract of a patient in Nepal. The amino acid sequence of NDM-8 has substitutions at positions 130 (Asp to Gly) and 154 (Met to Leu) compared with NDM-1. NDM-8 showed enzymatic activities against β-lactams similar to those of NDM-1.

Class B β-lactamases are known as metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) and they hydrolyze most β-lactams, including carbapenems. IMP-18, an MBL cloned from Pseudomonas aeruginosa, was overexpressed, purified and crystallized by vapour diffusion for X-ray crystallographic analysis. Preliminary X-ray analysis showed that the crystal diffracted to 2.4 Å resolution and belonged to the tetragonal space group...

An Ambler class A β-lactamase gene, bla(CIA-1), was cloned from the reference strain Chryseobacterium indologenes ATCC 29897 and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21. The bla(CIA-1) gene encodes a novel extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) that shared 68% and 60% identities with the CGA-1 and CME-1 β-lactamases, respectively. bla(CIA-1)-like genes were detected from clinical isolates. In addition...
