A one-pot three-component condensation of an aldehyde, malononitrile, and resorcinol has been achieved by ultrasound method. The reaction has been catalyzed by glycine in aqueous medium. This protocol afforded corresponding 2-amino-4H-chromenes in shorter reaction times, high yields and simple work-up procedures with the green aspects by avoiding toxic reagents.

Potassium salts of benzylidene and cinnamylidene derivatives malononitrile trimer were obtained by reactions substituted benzaldehydes cinnamaldehydes with in aqueous medium under ultrasonic irradiation. The synthesized showed solid state fluorescence the emission maxima located region λ 528–740 nm, depending on substituent aromatic ring.

A simple and efficient approach towards one step synthesis of 6-amino-5-cyano-4-phenyl-2-mercapto pyrimidine and its hydroxyl derivatives have been developed by three component condensation of aromatic aldehydes, malononitrile and thiourea/urea in presence of phosphorus pentoxide (Scheme 1).

The reported methodologies for the synthesis of chromane derivatives through the reaction of salicylaldehyde and enolates are discussed. The enolates and their equivalents involved in the reactions discussed in this article were derived from ketones, nitroalkanes, malononitrile and α,β-unsaturated compounds.

Silica tungstic acid (STA) has been found to be an efficient and reusable solid acid catalyst for the synthesis of 2-amino-4H-chromenes via the three-component reaction of aromatic aldehydes, malononitrile, and β-naphthol. STA as a novel solid acid was characterized by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

A third strategy for cross-dehydrogenative coupling reaction has been reported via platinum-catalyzed sp(3) C-H and sp(3) C-H coupling reaction in the absence of oxidant. Nitroalkanes as well as dialkyl malonate derivatives, beta-keto esters and malononitrile are active participants in this coupling reaction. Both cyclic and acyclic non-activated simple ketones are good reactants in this reaction.
