BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Tropical and vector borne diseases have always been a challenge for the medical science and society and exerted high impact on society in terms of financial, economical and psychological relevance. Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is one of the tropical diseases which is prevalent in under developing and developed countries. The objective of this study is to analyze the literat...
BACKGROUND Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) afflict around one billion individuals in the poorest parts of the world with many more at risk. Lymphatic filariasis is one of the most prevalent of the infections and causes significant morbidity in those who suffer the clinical conditions, particularly lymphedema and hydrocele. Depressive illness has been recognised as a prevalent disability in t...
The medical importance of mosquitoes as vectors for transmission of serious diseases that cause morbidity, mortality, economic loss, and social disruption such as malaria, lymphatic filariasis, and viral diseases is well-documented1. Mosquitoes not only cause nuisance by their bites but also transmit deadly disease like malaria, filariasis, yellow fever, dengue and Japanese encephalitis, contri...
In 2000, annual mass administration of diethlycarbamazine and albendazole began in Leogane Commune, Haiti, to interrupt transmission of lymphatic filariasis (LF). After 5 years of treatment, microfilaremia, antigenemia, and mosquito infection rates were significantly reduced, but LF transmission was not interrupted. These finding have implications for other LF elimination programs.
A study of 325,000 residents of 314 villages in six governorates of the Nile delta area of Egypt revealed that the prevalence of lymphatic filariasis increased from < 1% in 1965 to > 20% in 1991, especially in the governorates of Qalyubiya, Monufiya, Dakhaliya, and Giza. The distribution of the communites with endemic filariasis is focal. Clusters of villages with high prevalences are surrounde...
The current global initiative to eliminate lymphatic filariasis is a major renewed commitment to reduce or eliminate the burden of one of the major helminth infections from resource-poor communities of the world. Mathematical models of filariasis transmission can serve as an effective tool for guiding the scientific development and management of successful community-level intervention programme...
To explore the mechanisms of antigen-specific immune unresponsiveness seen in microfilaremic patients with bancroftian filariasis, T and B cell precursor frequency analysis was performed using PBMC from individuals with either asymptomatic microfilaremia (MF, n = 7) or chronic lymphatic obstruction (CP, n = 20). Highly purified CD3+ cells were partially reconstituted with adherent cells and the...
Filariasis is a major public health problem in tropical countries. The disease is endemic in large areas of India, Africa and parts of Asia. Lymphatic filariasis in humans is commonly caused by Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi. Extranodal filariasis is a rare entity, and the breast is an uncommon site for filariasis. Patients commonly present with an underlying lump and may occasionally m...
