BACKGROUND Fecal calprotectin (FC) is an established simple biomarker of gut inflammation. To examine a possible relationship between linear growth and gut inflammation, we compared fecal calprotectin levels in 6 month old infants from poor rural vs affluent urban families. METHODS The project was a cross-sectional comparison of FC from rural and urban populations in China. The relationship b...
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the growth parameters in infants who were born to HIV-1-infected mothers. METHODS The study was a longitudinal evaluation of the z-scores for the weight-for-age (WAZ), weight-for-length (WLZ) and length-for-age (LAZ) data collected from a cohort. A total of 97 non-infected and 33 HIV-infected infants born to HIV-1-infected mothers in Belo Horizonte, Southeastern Brazil, ...
Image zooming is one of the existing issues discussed in image processing in which the person is interested in enlarging a certain picture and fitting it into the visible area of the display devices. In zooming activities it is necessary that extra pixels be inserted in the information image. The addition of the image data should be suitable with the texture of the image without producing artif...
This paper is concerned with adaptive numerical methods for initial value problems governed by systems of ordinary differential equations. Here we introduce a novel step selection algorithm based on the simple idea that locally all continuous functions can be suitably approximated by a straight line. Finally we present two sample numerical computations performed by our step selection algorithm.
This is an exploratory paper about combining logics, combining theories and combining structures. Typically when one applies logic to such areas as computer science, artificial intelligence or linguistics, one encounters hybrid ontologies. The aim of this paper is to identify plausible strategies for coping with ontological richness.
A new stereo matching algorithm is introduced that performs iterative refinement on the results of adaptive support-weight stereo matching. During each iteration of disparity refinement, adaptive support-weights are used by the algorithm to penalize disparity differences within local windows. Analytical results show that the addition of iterative refinement to adaptive support-weight stereo mat...
In the cyclic Barzilai–Borwein (CBB) method, the same Barzilai–Borwein (BB) stepsize is reused for m consecutive iterations. It is proved that CBB is locally linearly convergent at a local minimizer with positive definite Hessian. Numerical evidence indicates that when m > n/2 3, where n is the problem dimension, CBB is locally superlinearly convergent. In the special case m = 3 and n = 2, it i...
