In a randomised, double-blind placebo-controlled trial, the effects of the administration of oral L-carnitine (2 g/day) for 28 days were compared in the management of 51 (carnitine group) and 50 (placebo group) patients with suspected acute myocardial infarction. At study entry, the extent of cardiac disease, cardiac enzymes and lipid peroxides were comparable between the groups, although both ...

The effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) (Ig/kg body weight in saline for 7 days) against the damages induced by gamma ray was studied. Whole body exposure of rats to gamma-rays (3.5 Gy) caused increases in lipid peroxides (P < 0.01). Reduced glutathione (GSH) (P < 0.01) and total sulphydryl groups (TSH) (P < 0.05), were found to be increased probably to counteract the damages produced by the lipid...

The concentrations of selenium and lipid peroxides and the catalytic activity of glutathione peroxidase were measured in the blood of 6 children (6-16 years of age) and 8 adults (17-27 years old) with Down's syndrome (trisomy 21). The values were compared with those for a control group of age-matched normal people. The selenium concentration in whole blood, erythrocytes and plasma was significa...

We report that Fe3O4 nanoparticles are able to catalyse lipid peroxidation in liposomes at acidic but not neutral pH. The oxidation is dependent on either pre-existing lipid peroxides or hydrogen peroxide as a substrate. This is the first evidence for metal oxide nanoparticles as peroxidase mimetics oxidising biomolecules in a relevant environment.

We examined cerebral lipid peroxidation, estimated by a thiobarbituric acid test, in rat brain regions after 30 minutes of severe forebrain ischemia and at recirculation periods of up to 72 hours. The lipid peroxide levels remained unaltered in all brain regions during ischemia and during the first hour of recirculation but were selectively increased between 8 and 72 hours of recirculation in t...

Incomplete global cerebral ischemia was induced by clamping the bilateral common carotid arteries of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and blood reperfusion was allowed by declamping the arteries after indicated times. To investigate the possible role of lipid peroxidation which causes irreversible ischemic cell injury during ischemia and subsequent reperfusion, cerebral energy metabolism, ...

We have shown that oxidative stress is a mechanism of free fatty acid (FFA)-induced β-cell dysfunction. Unsaturated fatty acids in membranes, including plasma and mitochondrial membranes, are substrates for lipid peroxidation, and lipid peroxidation products are known to cause impaired insulin secretion. Therefore, we hypothesized that mice overexpressing glutathione peroxidase-4 (GPx4), an enz...
