Several studies have investigated the antinociceptive, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties of compounds found in the lavender essential oil (LEO), however to date, there is still lack of substantial data. The objective of this study was to assess the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects of lavender essential oil. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical deco...

GPS radio occultation technique has been developed resulting from remote sensing applications in planetary atmospheric limb sounding pioneered by JPL and Stanford University in 1960s. Since the launch of the experimental satellite MicroLab1 on April 3 1995, the primary results from this Low Earth orbiter (LEO) satellite demonstrated potential scienti:c values and practical signi:cance of this i...

Analysis of meiotic tetrads is routinely used to determine genetic linkage in various fungi. Here we apply tetrad analysis to the study of genetic linkage in a vertebrate. The half-tetrad genotypes of gynogenetic diploid zebrafish produced by early-pressure (EP) treatment were used to investigate the linkage relationships of two recessive pigment pattern mutations, leopard (leo) and rose (ros)....

This paper contains a description of a network-based, Learning Environment Organizer entitled LEO, which takes its impetus from the Assimilation Theory of meaningful learning [1]. LEO represents a new approach to computer-mediated augmentation of face-to-face, or hybrid courses, and a different approach to distance learning course delivery. LEO provides the learner with a graphical advance orga...

PURPOSE To better understand the performance of four commercially available neurovascular stents in intracranial aneurysm embolization, the stents were compared in terms of their basic morphological and mechanical properties. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four different types of stents that are currently being used for cerebral aneurysm embolization were prepared (two stents per type). Two were laser...

The functional specialization or redundancy of the ubiquitous 14-3-3 proteins constitutes a fundamental question in their biology and stems from their highly conserved structure and multiplicity of coexpressed isotypes. We address this question in vivo using mutations in the two Drosophila 14-3-3 genes, leonardo (14-3-3zeta) and D14-3-3epsilon. We demonstrate that D14-3-3epsilon is essential fo...

Forrester’s model is described and critically analyzed with a view to understanding the relationship between his conclusions and his normative scheme. He claims that his model produces "counterintuitive" results; it is argued here that the main results follow directly from his goals. An alternative method of evaluating the results of the model is proposed, based upon the model’s calculation of ...

There is a growing consensus that developmental dyslexia is associated with a phonological-core deficit. One symptom of this phonological deficit is a subtle speech-perception deficit. The auditory basis of this deficit is still hotly debated. If people with dyslexia, however, do not have an auditory deficit and perceive the underlying acoustic dimensions of speech as well as people who read no...

We report initial experience with the use of a new intracranial stent, the Leo microstent in combination with detachable coils in treatment of patients with wide-necked cerebral aneurysms. The Leo stent represents a significant advance in the vascular treatment of intracranial aneurysm with high radial force and an easy delivery system. It is a feasible, secure, and effective system.

LEO-II, a resolution based theorem prover for classical higher-order logic, is currently being developed in a one year research project at the University of Cambridge, UK, with support from Saarland University, Germany. We briefly discuss the main objectives of the project. The LEO-II project is funded by EPSRC under grant EP/D070511/1.
