After contact precautions were discontinued, we determined nosocomial transmission of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli by screening hospital patients who shared rooms with ESBL-producing E. coli-infected or -colonized patients. Transmission rates were 2.6% and 8.8% at an acute-care and a geriatric/rehabilitation hospital, respectively. Prolonged contact was associ...

Background Group 3a/b cephalosporins are currently being used in the treatment of UTI and urosepsis. However, Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL) mediated resistance has been increasingly reported among uropathogens from HIV patients. We sought to determine the incidence of ESBL genesblaCTX-M, blaTEM and blaSHV among E. coli isolates from HIV (with increased exposure to cephalosporins) and ...

Objectives: Carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacilli are reported increasingly and represent an emerging public health concern. Laboratory detection of extended-spectrum b-lactamase (ESBL), plasmid-mediated cephalosporinase (pAmpC) and carbapenemase producers remains a challenge for microbiology laboratories and is important to avoid clinical failure due to inappropriate antimicrobial therapy...

The agar dilution, broth microdilution, and disk diffusion methods were compared to determine the in vitro susceptibility of 428 extended-spectrum-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae to fosfomycin. Fosfomycin showed very high activity against all ESBL-producing strains. Excellent agreement between the three susceptibility methods was found for E. coli, whereas ...

We evaluated the use of a trypticase soy broth (TSB) for improving detection of extended-spectrum-beta-lactamase-producing (ESBL(+)) bacteria. Preenrichment of throat and rectal swabs in TSB prior to inoculation on solid medium doubled the number of ESBL(+) bacteria detected in samples obtained from patients in our intensive care unit.

One unreported case of extended-spectrum-beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi was identified, whole-genome sequence typed, among other analyses, and compared to other available genomes of S. Typhi. The reported strain was similar to a previously published strain harboring blaSHV-12 from the Philippines and likely part of an undetected outbreak, the first of ESBL-pro...

Klebsiella quasipneumoniae subsp. similipneumoniae strain ATCC 700603, formerly known as K. pneumoniae K6, is known for producing extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) enzymes that can hydrolyze oxyimino-β-lactams, resulting in resistance to these drugs. We herein report the complete genome of strain ATCC 700603 and show that the ESBL genes are plasmid-encoded.

We report a case of typhoid fever in a traveler returning to Spain from Guatemala that was caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi which produced an extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL). This finding demonstrates the presence of ESBL-producing S. enterica ser. Typhi strains in the Americas. Enhanced surveillance is necessary to prevent further spread.

BACKGROUND Close contact between pets and owners provides the opportunity for transmission of antimicrobial resistant organisms like extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)/AmpC beta-lactamase (AmpC)-producing Enterobacteriaceae, posing a risk to public health. OBJECTIVES To investigate whether raw feed is a risk factor for household cats to shed ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae, a cohort st...
