Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has been useful in monitoring several medical conditions, which to date have generally involved local changes in skin oxygenation of isolated regions of interest such as skin flaps or small burns. Here, by contrast, we present a study in which HSI was used to assess the local cutaneous manifestations of significant systemic events. HSI of the ventral surface of the l...
OBJECTIVE To examine whether women with hypovolemic shock secondary to obstetric hemorrhage are transported to referral hospitals differently depending on weeks of pregnancy in Zambia. METHODS In a retrospective study, transport type, wait time, and transit time were assessed for women with obstetric hemorrhage and hypovolemic shock transported from 26 primary health centers to three referral...
Anaphylactic shock is an unexpected, sudden and sometimes deadly event that attacks the patient in 75% of the cases without pre-existent history of allergy. In general, drugs, hymenopteric poisons and nutrients (according to the recent concept) are responsible. Beside the classical IgE-mediated anaphylactic shock there exists another anaphylactic shock, identical in its clinical picture and tre...
In critically ill infants and children, intravascular (IV) access is sometimes very difficult. In such cases intraosseous (IO) infusion should be used as the method of choice. However, in practice, different problems are experienced with this procedure. To overcome the practical problems and to confirm the efficacy of IO infusion in reversing hypovolemic shock, an animal model was used by ...
Dogs and cats frequently present to veterinarians in hypovolemic shock following trauma. Blunt trauma from motor vehicles is by far the most common cause of trauma, and intravenous fluid therapy is one of the most important modalities of shock management in these patients. This lecture will cover fluid therapy options and their indications in patients presenting with a variety of complications ...
Few previous studies have monitored hemodynamic parameters to determine the physiological process of dengue or examined inferior vena cava (IVC) parameters to assess cardiac preload during the clinical phase of dengue. From January 2013 to July 2015, we prospectively studied 162 hospitalized adults with confirmed dengue viral infection using non-invasive cardiac output monitoring and bedside ul...
The clinical course of enteropathogenic (EPEC) and enteroinvasive escherichiosis (EIEC) in children was studied their comparative characteristics were carried out. We examined 82 sick with early age Escherichiosis, caused 28 byenteroinvasive, 54 strains. In EPEC, secretory diarrhea observed, EIEC —colitis. A more pronounced manifestation intoxication syndrome observed EPEC. manifestations diarr...
OBJECTIVE To determine the optimal vital sign predictor of adverse maternal outcomes in women with hypovolemic shock secondary to obstetric hemorrhage and to develop thresholds for referral/intensive monitoring and need for urgent intervention to inform a vital sign alert device for low-resource settings. STUDY DESIGN We conducted secondary analyses of a dataset of pregnant/postpartum women w...
Shock is an emergency that requires continuous bedside evaluation, resuscitation, and re-evaluation. The initial bedside examination allows the clinician to determine whether the patient exhibits a clinical picture that is consistent with hypovolemic, cardiogenic, or vasodilatory shock. The primary survey dictates urgent initial resuscitation that usually consists of intubation, ventilation, an...
We describe the case of a young HIV-positive man who presented to the emergency room in hypovolemic shock. During subsequent evaluation, we documented a huge aortic aneurysm consistent with tertiary syphilis. The final autopsy demonstrated the extent of cardiovascular compromise caused by this aneurysm.
